Airam Electric is a Finnish company that manufactures lighting products and intelligent lighting for electrical engineering and consumer use.[1] Amongst the many locations for which Airam has carried out lighting design are Helsinki Airport, the Posti logistics centre, Kaari shopping centre in Kannelmäki, Helsinki, the Hämeenlinna City Library in southern Finland, and several offices, schools, sports centres and housing fairs.

The professional lighting range covers both indoor and outdoor lighting for residential buildings and public and commercial spaces such as airports, shops, offices, schools, sports centres, car parks and industrial buildings.[2] As a Finnish operator, Airam focuses on lighting design solutions that are particularly suited to northern climatic conditions.

History

Airam’s history dates back to 1921, when it was founded as Suomen Sähkölampputehdas.[3] Initially, the company’s activities focused on the maintenance and repair of electric lamps. Its ownership base grew in 1931, with three other companies becoming shareholders: Strömberg, Suomen Kaapelitehdas, and Pohjoismainen Sähkö.[3] This led to the decision to start manufacturing lamps, and the Sähkölampputehdas glass factory was established for this purpose in Punavuori, Helsinki, in 1933. Later, the company’s shares were transferred in full to Suomen Kaapelitehdas. In addition to bulb blowing, production expanded to include the blowing of inner bottles for thermal flasks. The most famous of these is undoubtedly Airam’s classic red thermal flask, which was first produced in 1934.

Illuminated advertisements were introduced to the streets in the 1930s, especially in the Helsinki area. In the spirit of the times, in 1936 a neon lighting unit was set up at the glassworks, and through it the company collaborated closely with various architects and advertisers.

In 1938, the company’s name was changed to Airam Oy Ab. There are various stories about the origin of Airam’s name, such as its similarity to rival companies Osram and Tungsram.[4] The name is also a reference to wolfram, an archaic term for the metal used for the filament in incandescent light bulbs. Airam is also a backwards spelling of the female name Maria, which is also thought to have been one of the reasons for choosing it.

During World War II, Airam’s new production of lamps was limited. Instead, the company largely focused on repairing old lamps due to lack of materials, and illuminated signs were switched off for safety and to save electricity. A black version of the thermal flask was made for the Finnish Defence Forces.

The company’s glass factory in Suutarila, Helsinki was opened in 1944. Among the innovations made at Airam’s glass factory were fluorescent lamps that imitated natural light. The large scoreboard designed and manufactured by Airam for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics attracted international attention.[5]

The WIR lamp designed for Airam by the renowned Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala was awarded the Grand Prix prize at the Milan Triennial XII art and design exhibition in 1960.[6] In the 1960s, Airam carried out extensive automation of its electric lamp production process, and in the following decade the Suutarila glass factory in Helsinki began manufacturing high-pressure sodium lamps and fluorescent lamps.

At the Habitare design fair in Helsinki in 2015, Airam exhibited prototypes of OLED light fixtures it designed in collaboration with Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The WIR-85 lamps designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1960 were relaunched at the 2017 Habitare fair. They now feature a LED light source. At the electricity fair held in Jyväskylä, central Finland in 2020, Airam exhibited wireless lighting control solutions for public spaces and smart homes.
