Ajay Kumar Saroj is an Indian born Track & Field athlete who has won the Gold medal at the Asian Championships, 2017. He is supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Abhinav Bindra Targeting Performance Programme

Early life and background[edit | edit source]

Ajay Kumar Saroj hails from the spiritual town in Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad, and is the youngest among 7 siblings consisting of 3 sisters and 4 brothers. Noticing his disinterest in academics, his sisters, who are also long distance runners, egged him to take up the sport. Ajay’s parents were very supportive of his endeavor to join athletics and he took up his discipline from the age of 14. Currently pursuing graduation as a B.A first year student, Ajay is indebted to the words of his coach, Mr. J.S. Kumar Bhatia whose advice transformed his career

Career[edit | edit source]

Ajay initially used to sprint 400m, which required lots of vitamins, proteins and turned out to be an expensive affair for him. On the suggestion of his coach, Ajay shifted his focus to 1500m & 800m, which was less expensive and allowed Cross Country participation to garner extra money to take care of his needs. A fatherly figure, Mr. Bhatia used to bear all his expenses initially, but now his eldest brother takes care of the financial requirement so that he can concentrate fully on his career. An avid learner, Ajay used to watch the Olympic Games on DD Sports to learn the nuances of athletics. The 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi was an eye opener for Ajay as he went on to participate in the Junior Nationals Athletics Championships in 2012 and won a bronze medal in 1000m. His first international medal came in 2016 when he won the Gold medal in 1500m at the SAF Games in Guwahati. A Gold medal at the Asian Junior Athletic Championship, 2016 and two Gold medals in 1500m and 4*400m relay at the Asian Athletic Championships held in Odisha, 2017 followed after his feat at the SAF Games. He is also inducted in the Govt. of India backed Target Olympic Podium Scheme. Ajay is currently training 6 days a week at the SAI, Bangalore Center and looks up to national heroes Sudha Singh, Lalita Babar for inspiration. Ajay, who would have been trying his hand at some business had he not picked up athletics is proving his doubters wrong through his exploits at both national and international competitions.
