Ajay Patel is a Canadian academic and President & Chief Executive Officer of Vancouver Community College.[1][2]
Prior to his appointment as President of VCC in September, 2019, Patel served as a Vice-President of Langara College[3][4]
Early life and education
Patel was born in Fiji and emigrated to Canada in 1975.[2]. Growing up in East Vancouver, he attended Vancouver Community College, Langara College, and the University of British Columbia[5]
Career
Patel began his academic career as a Kinesiology instructor at Langara College before successive appointments saw him attain the position of Vice-President [1][2][6]. At Langara College he was responsible for leading the expansion of the Digital Arts program and initiating the process of constructing a new campus in False Creek Flats[7].
In 2019, he was chosen as Vancouver Community College's new President & CEO.[2]
As President & CEO of Vancouver Community College, Patel has launched several community-wide initiatives in Downtown Vancouver, including the opening of a community kitchen space in Downtown Vancouver to provide at-risk residents of the Downtown Eastside (DTES) with free hot meals during the COVID-19 pandemic[8]. He is also leading the development of VCC's Downtown Campus site which will involve a multi-million dollar mixed-use redevelopment of several city blocks in Downtown Vancouver [9][10][11][12].
In 2021, he was named as one of Canada's top 25 immigrants for his contributions to the community and stewardship during the COVID-19 pandemic[13]. That year, he was also appointed to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Bureau of International Education[6].
