Ajithkumar J Varma (Malayalam:അജിത്കുമാർ ജെ വർമ്മ) (Hindi:अजीतकुमार जे वर्मा) is a Criminologist and a former official who worked with various Indian diplomatic missions including the Indian High Commission at UK and United Nations Refugee Agency in the UK..[1] He started his career from Indian Navy as a commissioned officer before moving into Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).In addition, Ajithkumar, nicknamed "Captain AMJ Nair", is rumoured to be a former member of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&W), the prime external intelligence agency of India [2],[3]

Early life and education[edit]

Ajithkumar was born to MK Janardhana and Lakshmi in the Thodupuzha a small village of Idukki district in Kerala. The Kottayam dynasty, which gave birth to King Pazhassi, migrated to South Kerala from North Malabar, which was destroyed during Tipu's Invasion. His family headquarters is at Karavattidam Kovilakam, family and a family temple still exist in the village of Kallara in Kottayam. He completed his primary education in Thodupuzha and later his degree in Chemistry from Pala St. Thomas College in Kottayam district and his postgraduate studies in Polymer Chemistry. Ajithkumar participated in the Republic Day Parade held in New Delhi named Rajpath parade in 2001 and received the trophy from the then Hon'ble Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. During this time he completed SCUBA diving and microlight training from INS Venduruthy at Southern Naval Command Kochi and INS Mandovi Goa .[4],[5]. Later Ajithkumar obtained his Masters in Business Administration from Middlesex University, London. He obtained another master's degree in Human Rights and Development Management from Open University UK. Soon after the masters he obtained a Criminology and Criminal Justice diploma from the prestigious University of London and qualified as a Criminologist.[6], [7]

Career[edit]

Contributions of Ajithkumar as head of Investigation[8] on refugee issues at UNHCR London was widely appreciated.[9]. Ajithkumar was an advisory expert and part of a Special Investigation Team attached with Justice Narayana Kurup Commission of the State Police Complaints Authority to investigate several custodial tortures especially custodial murder at Parassala police station, Marangattupalli Sibi death at Marangattupalli police custody etc >..[10] [11]. [12] He Formerly worked for government of India, Ministry of External/ Home Affairs in various capacities as Visa Officer, Consular Officer, Chief Protocol Officer and Programme Director at the Indian High Commission, London. He also had a great role as Programme Officer at the Nehru Centre London for promoting and formulating India’s external cultural relations, to foster mutual understanding between India and UK to promote cultural exchanges with people.[13] He was joined Indian Navy earlier as an Officer Cadet/Midshipman[14]

Litrature[edit]

His book 'the controversial word custody is an outstanding academic reference for custodial torture. Director B Unnikrishnan is all set to direct a screenplay written by Ajithkumar codifying his unforgettable official experience during his tenure as the Visa Officer of the Indian High Commission UK.He has written numerous short stories and articles.
