The Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts/Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) was founded in December, 1949, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and inaugurated in January, 1950.[1] It initially had five divisions: painting, sculpture, handicrafts, graphic arts, and a training course for art teachers.[2] In 1955, Affandi began to teach at the school.[3] In November 1968, the school officially changed its name to the Sekolah Tinggi Seni Rupa Indonesia (STSRI), though it popularly continued to be known as ASRI. In 1984, it became part of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts. A number of artists studied at ASRI played a large part in making Yogyakarta one of the "two embryos of the Indonesian New Art Movement".[4]
