Akakçe is the first Turkish price comparison website, which was founded by Koray Karataş in November 3th 2000. In 2003 Taner Şahin involved in the project. They founded Akakçe Ltd. (now Akakçe Inc.) in 2006.

%20 percent shares of Akakçe, which in strategic cooperation with one of the leaders of Japenese e-commerce market Netprice[1], belongs to Beenos Group.[2]

History[edit]

First Years (1998-2004)[edit]

Emerging the most comprehensive search engine Google in 1997 affects the whole world's search algorithms. Koray Karataş, who followed Google's moves in those years, by realizing Google's lack of a vertical search system, started to create a vertical search engine algorithm. The aim was to develop a searching bot to collect all information from websites that users can not find by doing ordinary search on Google, and the other aim was to present it to the users dynamically.[3]

Koray Karataş finished in 2000 the core bot technology which was named by himself as “bilBot”[4]. At the same time he developed it as a hobby over years. After he chose price comparison as the subject, he began with “akakce.com” in November 3th, 2000 to test the bilBot and make sample works. He made a presentation, named “An Anatomy of Turkish Internet Robot: bilBot”, about Bilbot, a local internet robot, in ITU, 2001. In this presentation he explained the results of bilBot as:

“This website (akakce.com) works without interruption daily and continuously even on days of intense price movements with a few operations, in addition to that, during this time 62 web sources, including foreign sources, can get indexed without any problem. For now there is no data source, that bilBot can not index and collect data. In this situation, even if it is not 100% success academically, but practically there is no data source exception.” [5]

Akakçe got attention from users after 3 years, in 2003 Koray Karataş shared the project with Taner Şahin and they started to run Akakçe project together. 2003 was a year Akakçe started to be renewed and developed especially in terms of interface. Because e-commerce systems were not common and lack of internet revenue models until 2005, they ran the project together without expecting any money and their aim was to inform the users and to add value to the project.

Today (2005-)[edit]

Akakçe began to gain new users in 2005 while internet was becoming common and e-commerce was developing in those times. After they got several offers from some major companies, they thought that Akakçe and bilBot might have trading profits. Then they established Akakçe company named as Bilirim Technology and Software Inc. at METU Technopolis[6] in 2006 and made Akakçe a full-time company beyond an amateur project.

Thanks to Akakçe, that brings together e-commerce websites in one platform, “E-commerce Business Association”[7] was established by organizing a conference called "Meeting of Internet Stores" on November 23th, 2006. The company started to grow after year of 2006, survived the recession in terms of the economic crisis, even though it didn't get affected negatively in “Great Recession” times.

TechCrunch, which has an important place in the world in terms of technology journalism, posted a news about besides that Akakçe has price informations on internet, also has price informations that in stores’ brochures. [8]

Akakçe mobile app that was presented to the users in 2010, was on the main news bulletin of Channel D as “ Application like a Revolution”. The news explained that when users want to know the price of a product, they can scan the code of the product in Akakçe App and see all prices from other stores’.[9]

The company that continued growing even after 2008-2012 Worldwide Economic Crisis, took a investment from Japanese e-commerce company “Netprice” in exchange for 20% of its shares.[2]

After a strategic partnership with Netprice in 2013, Akakçe kept growing and became a marketplace at the same time with the system of “Easy Order”. According to co-founder of Akakçe Koray Karataş at the Webrazzi Financial Services 2016 conference, there are more than 500 stores listed in Akakçe actively.[10]
