Akbar Motabizadeh (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; 23 July 1963 – 12 June 2025) was an Iranian nuclear engineer. He served until his death as one of the heads of the Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND) responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the military.[1]
Biography
Motabizadeh was born in 1963 in Yazd. He headed for years the Shahid Karimi Group, a subdivision of the Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND).[2] He was involved as engineer in the nuclear program of Iran.[3] He also worked as an academic at the Shahid Beheshti University and was a physics lecturer at the Islamic Azad University of Yazd.[4]
In March 2019, the U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned him. According to the department, he was involved in research related to weapon systems, explosives, and shock testing. He reportedly supervised military-related projects within the Shahid Karimi Group and served as a personal advisor to Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the then-head of SPND.[2]
On 12 June 2025 Motabizadeh was killed during the June 2025 Israeli strikes on Iran together with multiple other high placed nuclear scientists at the age of 61.[5]
