Akiko Iwase (岩瀬晶子, Akiko Iwase) is a Japanese actress, scriptwriter, and producer. She has appeared in international films such as "Earthquake Bird" and "Minamata".

Career[edit]

Akiko Iwase was born and raised in Tochigi, Japan.

After high school, she went on to higher education in the U.S. and graduated from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. After graduating from college, Akiko returned to Japan and started her acting career in Tokyo. She has been acting on stage, on film, and on TV ever since.

In 2008, she started her own theater company called "Bion" in which she plays the role of an actor, scriptwriter, and producer. Since its establishment, "Bion" performs once or twice a year regularly.[1]. In 2017, she was awarded as both the Best Actor and the Best Scriptwriter at Kamome Short Play Festival which is a national competition for short plays in Japan[2].

Akiko's first appearance in an international film was "The Forest" (2016) directed by Jason Zada followed by a Netflix movie "Earthquake Bird" (2019) directed by Wash Westmoreland, produced by Ridley Scott[3]. Then she participated in "Minamata (film)"(2020) directed by Andrew Levitas[4]. She attended its world premiere at Berlin International Film Festival in February 2020 along with its lead actor Johnny Depp , Bill Nighy, and Hiroyuki Sanada[5]

As a scriptwriter, she has written many plays as well as TV dramas such as a popular Japanese detective series called"Keishicho sosa ikka kyu gakari" and "Tokuso 9"[6]. She has also written and produced a medium-length film titled "Lunar Maria" in 2021.
