Akil Hirani is the Managing Partner and Head of Transactions Practice at Majmudar & Partners,[1] a leading law firm based in India. He specializes in structuring investments of foreign companies and financial institutions into India, tax and regulatory advice, mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures, and private equity. He has been ranked as one of the most in-demand lawyers in India by Chambers Asia.[2]

Akil Hirani graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, University of Mumbai, in 1989, and obtained his LLB (Hons.) from the Government Law College, Mumbai, in 1992, having won the gold medal at the University examinations for Private International Law.[3]

He was enrolled to the Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa in August 1992.  He qualified as a Solicitor in 1993 and was admitted to the coveted Bombay Incorporated Law Society in December 1993.  In March 1994, he appeared and passed the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test and was admitted to practice in England & Wales.  In July 1994, he passed the bar exams conducted by the State Bar of California (having been specifically waived from the LL.M. study requirement in the US), and was admitted to practice law in California in January 1995.

Akil Hirani has authored several articles and publications[4] on topics including structuring investments into India[5], outsourcing to India[6], joint ventures in India[7], and tax issues. He is a member, among others, of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of California[8] and the International Bar Association[9]

Hirani regularly speaks on mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, issues affecting hedge funds and Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), investment strategies in India, and related subjects at many international forums, including at seminars held by Terrapin in India and Hong Kong, Practicing Law Institute (PLI) and ATLAS Legal in the US, and the International Bar Association. He has been featured on shows on CNBC TV18[10], Bloomberg UTV[11], ET Now, and BW Legal World[3]
