"Al-Tamhid Lima fi Al-Muwatta' min Al-Ma'ani wa Al-Asanid" (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a commentary on Hadith's recorded in Al-Muwatta'. It was authored by Ibn 'Abd al-Barr (368-463 AH). This work is considered unique in its field and serves as a comprehensive encyclopedia of Islamic jurisprudence and hadith.
Description
In Al-Tamhid, Ibn Abd al-Barr elaborates on Imam Malik ibn Anas's Al-Muwatta', but organizes it differently. Instead of following Imam Malik's original order, he arranges the work by the chains of transmission (isnad) according to the names of Imam Malik's teachers, from whom he narrated the hadiths in Al-Muwatta'. Ibn Abd al-Barr groups the hadiths of each narrator into separate sections, sorting them alphabetically. He provides biographical information about the narrators, verifies the hadiths, and offers linguistic and jurisprudential explanations. Furthermore, he discusses the views of scholars and jurists.[citation needed]
The book focuses exclusively on hadiths directly attributed to the prophet Muhammad, whether they are connected (Muttasel), disconnected (Munqaṭiʻ), suspended (Mursal), or attributed to companions, omitting the opinions and narrations included in Al-Muwatta' that are not directly linked to the prophet. Ibn Abd al-Barr dedicated more than thirty years to the composition of Al-Tamhid.
