Al Wohoosh (Arabic: الوحوش) is a community of the Emirate of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Administratively it is part of the Sector 7 and is located in eastern Dubai.
Territory
The territory of the community occupies an area of 25.4 km2[1] which develops in a non-urban area in the north- east of Dubai, bordering the Emirate of Sharjah.
The area is bounded on the north by the community of Al Awir, on the east by municipality of Sharjah, on the south by the communities of Al Meryal and Lehbab, and on the west by the community of Enkhali.[2]
The territory of Al Wohoosh is totally desert and, with the exception of some remote farms for agricultural production and/or horse and camel breeding, devoid of continuously inhabited settlements.
The Arabic name of the community الوحوش literally translated means "the monsters", this name derives from the fact that in the past the area was known for the presence of predatory animals.[3]
A large part of the territory of the community is occupied by the Al Wohoosh Desert Conservation Reserve, a protected area established in 2014. Here there are several safari camps managed by authorized tour operators that offer tourists desert life experiences.[4]
The region's climate is hot and arid. The minimum temperatures never drop below 10 °C and the maximum temperatures can exceed 42 °C in the hottest months. Rainfall is scarce. In the wettest months of February and March, it averages 32–40 mm, while in the driest months of June to October, it only averages 2–7 mm per month.[5]
The community is not served by public transport and the closest significant road to the area is the Nazwa Road (S 149) which runs a few hundred meters from the eastern edge of the community in the territory of the Emirate of Sharjah. In Dubai territory the nearest major road is the Dubai-Hatta Road (E 44) which is about 10 km from Al Wohoosh.[2]
