Alameda Peeps is a private Facebook group and community organization for people living in Alameda, California. Alameda Peeps is well known for it's philanthropy and activism within the community and region, often being featured in newspapers and magazines including the East Bay Times, Alameda Sun, Alameda Magazine, and Alameda Post.[2][3].

The Alameda Peeps group was created on October 11th, 2010. As of October 31st, 2022 it has 15,968 members. Alameda Peeps limits it's membership to only those living within the City of Alameda and claims to have approximately 20% of the population of the city as members.[1]

Philanthropy and Activism[edit]

Alameda Peeps is well known for host regular fund raising events, including "cash mobs" for local business and causes, Thanksgiving "Turkey Drives", and Blood drives, within the community.[2]

Turkey Drives[edit]

Alameda Peeps organizes an annual Thanksgiving "Turkey Drives" for the Alameda Food Bank.[4][5]. In 2021, they raised $25,885.[6] As of November 2nd 2022, they have raised $17,305 dollars.[7]

Cash Mobs[edit]

Alameda Peeps is known for hosting sporadic "Cash Mobs" to help out local businesses and causes. Originally organized similar to a flash mob, peeps would all arrive suddenly and support the business with traffic, but later ones evolved to also support business and causes online.[8]

Blood Drives[edit]

Alameda Peeps also organizes regular blood drives with the Red Cross.[9][10]

2014 Holiday Celebration[edit]

In December 2014, after a 20-foot Christmas tree was stolen on Alameda's West End business district mean for an upcoming holiday celebration, Alameda Peeps reacted by collecting cash and gifts and organizing a large celebration for the city.[11].

2016 Slow down in Town[edit]

In May 2016, after a number of pedestrian accidents, Alameda Peeps organized a Slow Down in Town campaign in cooperation with the City of Alameda. Peeps organized events across the city to hand out lawn signs asking members of the community to "drive 25" in town. In the majority of Alameda, the roads have speed limit of 25MPH.[12][13][14]

2017 Fire Response[edit]

In October 2017, Alameda Peeps made news coverage for renting and filing a truck with supplies for victims of the October 2017 Northern California wildfires.[15][16]

2017 Hands Across Alameda[edit]

In on Earth Day 2017 Alameda Peeps organized a "Hands Across Alameda" event in conjunction with the City of Alameda where over 1,000 members of the community members linked hands reaching over 1 mile along Alameda Beach.[17][18][19]

2017 and 2019 School Lunch Debt Cash Mobs[edit]

In 2017, Alameda Peeps held a "cash mod" which raised enough money to pay of the entirety of the Alameda Unified School District student school lunch debt.[20]. In August 2019, Alameda Peeps members organized another "cash mob" raising over $6,000 to pay off entirety of the school lunch debt yet again.[21]

2019 Government Shutdown Coast Guard Support Cash Mob[edit]

In January 2019 Peeps organized a "cash mob" to help local Coast Guard members stationed in Alameda who were left without a salary during the 2018–2019 United States federal government shutdown[22]

2020 Pandemic Community Support Efforts[edit]

In May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic pandemic, Alameda Peeps members created a directory of local businesses still open and offering takeout and delivery food. The City of Alameda would later take ownership and maintenance of the list to make it public resource for the entire city.[23][24].

In April 2020, during the height of the pandemic lock downs, Alameda Peeps organized community porch concerts across the city where people could listen to music while social distancing.[25]

Trademark[edit]

In 2020, after dealing with a number of offshoots groups by former members claiming to be the original Alameda Peeps group, admins of the Alameda Peeps group filed a federal trademark to protect the name.[26]
