Alan Rudford Colwell (1 December 1897 – 2 November 1975) was an Australian radiologist who served as Federal Secretary[1] and President[2] of the College of Radiologists of Australasia.

Biography[edit]

Colwell was born in Berry, New South Wales, the first child, and only son, of Grace (née Kelynack) and the Rev James Colwell (1860–1930).[3] His father was a Methodist minister and historian who was the author of The Illustrated History of Methodism in Australia[4]. His maternal grandfather was the Rev Dr William Kelynack (1831–1891) who had been President of the General Conference of the Australasian Wesleyan Methodist Church.[5]

His early education had been at country schools within the circuits his father had served until he attended Bowral District School, successfully sitting the Intermediate Certificate in 1914.[6] He then completed his senior school education at Newington College in 1915 and 1916[7] where he was Secretary of the Christian Union.[8] At the University of Sydney he graduated as a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Chirurgery in 1923.[9] He undertook postgraduate studies in London at the Great Ormond Street Hospital.[10] From 1928 until 1971, Colwell presented the James Colwell Prize for Modern History in the Sixth Form at Newington in honour of his father who had been a teacher at the College.[11] In 1947 he gained a Diploma in Radiology.[12] During World War II Colwell attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, serving with the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. He became Director of Radiological Services at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1955.[13][14]

Colwell married twice. In 1933 he married Lotte (née Schneider)[15] who died in 1936.[16] In 1943 he married Joan (née MacLean).[17] At the time of his death in 1974 he was a resident of Woollahra, New South Wales.[18]
