Alan John Hu (born February 21, 1967) is an American-Canadian computer scientist who is the professor of computer science at the University of British Columbia.
Early life and education
Alan John Hu was born on February 21, 1967, in Madison, Wisconsin. He won first place in computer science at the 1984 International Science and Engineering Fair. In 1985, he won first place in the Regeneron Science Talent Search. He graduated valedictorian of La Jolla High School later that year. He was a National Merit Scholar and a Presidential Scholar finalist. He also studied at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne that year.[1][2]
In 1986, Hu received the Stanford President's Award for Academic Achievement in the Freshman Year. He earned his Bachelor of Science at Stanford University in 1989, and later his PhD, also at Stanford University, in 1996 under his doctoral advisor David L. Dill.[3] During his time at Stanford, Hu was the associate editor-in-chief of Computing Futures.[2]
Career
After receiving his PhD in 1996, Hu began working as an assistant professor and taught a graduate seminar on formal verification techniques at the University of British Columbia. He is now the professor of computer science.[4]
Personal life
Hu emigrated from the United States to Canada as a permanent resident. He holds American citizenship and resides in Vancouver.[2]
