Albert Byaruhanga Abwooli (12 June 1951 – 26 October 2009) was a Ugandan Roman Catholic priest who served the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal from 1980 to his death. From 2004 to 2005 he served as the Executive Secretary for Education, Uganda Episcopal Conference Kampala and as a Member education Committee and Special services desk, Uganda Joint Christian Council.[1]

Background and education[edit]

Byaruhanga was born on 13 June 1951 at Mugusu, Fort Portal to Tereza and Patrick Babuuza. He was the fifth born in a family of eight children,[2] four girls and four boys.[3]

He started primary school in 1960 at St. Charles Nyansozi and in 1966 was admitted to St. Mary’s Seminary for primary seven and senior one. From there he was sent to St. John Bosco, a new established minor seminary in Hoima. From 1972 to 1974 he joined Katigondo National Major Seminary. From 1974 to 1975 he studied theology at St. Mary's Ggaba National Major Seminary and at the same time pursued a Diploma in religious studies at Makerere University. In 1975 he left Ggaba for England and at the end of 1976 he joined the Gregorian University for Theology in Rome until 1979.[3]

Priest[edit]

Byaruhanga was ordained a priest on 19 October 1980 at Virika Cathedral by Bishop Serapio Bwemi Magambo. He served as a chaplain at Holy Family Virika School of Nursing, at St. Maria Goretti Secondary School and at Kyebambe Girls Secondary school from 1980 to 1985.

Awards[edit]

In 2006, the government of Austria gave Byaruhanga an award, ‘The Decoration of Honour in Gold’ in recognition for his services. He established the Austrian government’s programmes and is also credited for playing a crucial role in the development of relations between Austria and Uganda.[2]

Death[edit]

Byaruhanga died on the way to hospital after a terrible car accident at Kyanda along Mubende-Mityana road in his car a Toyota Rav4 UC0160C lost control and overturned after knocking 2 pedestrians. One of the pedestrians identified as Joseph Kigundu also died.[4]
