Albert "Alby" Grant, played by Matt Ross, is a fictional character from the HBO series Big Love. The character is loosely based on the real-life polygamist leader Warren Jeffs.

Overview[edit]

Alby Grant is introduced in the pilot episode as a hard-line member of the fictional polygamist group United Effort Brotherhood (UEB). He is one of the many sons of Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton), the "Prophet" of the organization. His mother is Roman's sixth wife, Adaleen (Mary Kay Place), and Nicki (Chloë Sevigny), Bill Henrickson's second wife, is his sister. Alby sees himself as being groomed for the sect's top position.

Alby and his father dislike Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton), viewing him as morally wayward and disloyal. After Bill refuses to give Roman a percentage of his income, Roman sends Alby to intimidate Bill. Alby's schemes include scaring Bill's kids.

Alby's closeted homosexuality is hinted at when he encounters a street hustler and later through comments made by his sister Nicki. During the first season, Alby is poisoned by Wanda (Melora Walters) and nearly dies. In the second season, Alby seeks revenge, particularly against Bill, whom he believes is involved in the poisoning attempt.

After his father's assassination, Alby becomes the UEB's leader and the series' primary villain. He runs the UEB with an iron fist, exiling and excommunicationing dissenters. A key plot in the third season involves a forged Mormon document, which Alby uses to con money from the LDS Church.

Alby's mother hires a contract killer to assassinate him, but the attempt fails. Alby and his wife Lura (Anne Dudek) plot revenge against his mother. In the fourth season, Alby learns of his father's death and becomes the new prophet. He engages in a sexual relationship with Dale Tomasson (Ben Koldyke), an attorney assigned to the UEB. Despite Dale's efforts to reform Alby's hard-line church, Alby's mental state deteriorates, and he experiences schizophrenic episodes.

After Dale's suicide, Alby becomes a fugitive as the FBI indicts him on various crimes, including murder, tax evasion, and arranging illegal marriages.
