The Alcazar Library of France was heavily damaged by a large fire which began on 30 June 2023.[1][2][3] At the time of its arson, the library was one of the biggest in France, containing nearly a million documents.
Background
The Alcazar Library was built in several phases starting from 1857. It was discontinued in 1996, and relaunched in 2004. The library building, with a total surface area of 18,000 m², consists of 1,000 seats, a conference room, an auditorium, a space for storytelling, an exhibition room, and 150 computer stations. This ancient monument in Marseille is now one of the most fully researched sites in the city.[4]
Arson
On 27 June 2023, Nahel Merzouk was shot dead near the Nanterre-Université train station by a police officer. The incident sparked violent protests across France, including in Marseille. Protesters started burning vehicles and shops in several cities in France.[5]
Protesters set fire to shops, supermarkets, vehicles and institutions in Marseille after 27 June. On 30 June 2023, the historic Alcazar Library was set on fire by violent protesters.[3][6] The window of the library was smashed. But, the protesters failed to completely destroy the library.[1][7]
Reaction
The arson incident was condemned by the political class in Marseille. The city's mayor, Benoît Payan, said: "The violence and damage that took place last night in the city center, in shops and in our Alcazar Library, a place of life for all Marseille residents, is unacceptable".[8]
