Alex Attard is a fine arts photographer born in Malta, specialising in Architecture photography.

Career[edit]

Attard was born in Valletta to a family that has been connected to photography since 1913. He gained his initial photographic education firsthand through his grandfather at the family studio.[1] In 2007, he took up photography again after a hiatus of over twenty-five years, creating a body of work of a largely architectural nature.[2]

Work[edit]

In 2016 he participated in the Venice Art Biennale with Architecture Projects.[3] This led to a group exhibition in Paris entitled 'Reasonable Dreams'.[4]

In 2019 he was nominated for the 2019 Prix Pictet award for his Parallel Existences series.[2]

His Publication, Parallel Existences, The Notarial Archives, A Photographer’s Inspiration was a project conducted in collaboration with the Notarial Archives headed by President Giovanni Bonello. It was hailed as 'ground breaking' through its portrayal of old documents found in the Notarial Archives dating back centuries.[5] What started out as a solo exhibition soon turned into a publication holding the same title.[5] It was awarded the 2019 Best Book Production by the Malta National Book Council. Through this work Attard gives life to irrecoverable, damaged documents and imbues them with a new energy .[6]

"The Overlooked Performance",[7] is a visual essay that chronicles unconscious behavior of workers as well as recording the ephemeral art underneath the face of Renzo Piano's new Parliament for Valletta.[1]

A portfolio of his work forms part of the National Art Collection of Malta.[8]
