Alex Donahue is an award-winning American designer and lecturer [1], most noted for product design. [2] His work, titled "Pride Watch" [3][4] was awarded the gold medal at the 2020 International Design Awards [5] in addition, the design won the acclaimed 2020 Good Design Award (Chicago Athenaeum). Noted for being one of the oldest design awards program in the United States, beginning as a sponsorship of the MoMA in New York City and continues today by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.[6][7] In addition, Donahue has also won the Italian based A' Design award. [8] Donahue's designs are often minimal, but carry a deeper meaning or cause. [9] Donahue has also practiced architecture at several internationally recognized design firms which include the office of Michael Graves, Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM),[10] Sculpture in the Environment (SITE) and Pei Cobb Freed[11] the architecture firm founded by I.M.Pei. [12][13]
Early Career[edit]
Donahue began his career working at SITE as a mentee of noted artist James Wines[12] and collaborated with Wines on the Terra Time Watch series. [14] Donahue holds a professional Bachelor of Architecture, post-professional Master of Architecture from The Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Real Estate from Georgetown University. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning and Design at the University of Maryland, College Park where he also lectures. Donahue contributed to the Daily Collegian as an editorial cartoonist, he also created public artwork in State College, PA during his time there.[15] [16]
Lecturing[edit]
Donahue currently lectures at George Washington University in the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design.[17] and The University of Maryland [18] He was awarded the 2020 Outstanding Teaching Award. [19] Donahue serves on the Alumni Board of Directors for the Penn State College of Arts and Architecture [20] [21][22]
