S. Alex Ruthmann (born March 14, 1978) is associate professor of music education and music technology and director of the Music Experience Design Lab at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (New York University).[1] Ruthmann also serves as a faculty associate at New York University Shanghai's Program on Creativity and Innovation[citation needed] and as an affiliate faculty member of the Educational Communication and Technology program at Steinhardt.[citation needed]

Education[edit]

Ruthmann is a graduate of Paseo Academy and earned a Bachelor of Music in music and technology at the University of Michigan (2000) and Master of Music and PhD degrees in music education at Oakland University (2000 and 2006, respectively).

Academic career[edit]

Ruthmann taught middle school general music at Cranbrook Schools before serving as an assistant professor at Indiana State University (2006-2008) and University of Massachusetts Lowell, before being appointed associate professor of music education and music technology at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development in 2013.

Ruthmann currently serves as Chair of the Music in Schools and Teacher Education Commission (MISTEC) of the International Society for Music Education,[2] and as associate editor for the Journal of Music, Technology, and Education.[3] In the past, he has served as president of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction[4] and co-editor of the International Journal of Education & the Arts[5]

NYU Music Experience Design Lab[edit]

The Music Experience Design Lab, founded in 2013 by Ruthmann,[6] designs and researches new technologies and experiences for music making, learning and engagement. The MusEDLab has collaborated with the New York Philharmonic,[7] Peter Gabriel,[8] Herbie Hancock and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz,[9] the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation's Soundbreaking[10] programs developing such initiatives as Math Science Music,[9] Play With Your Music,[11] and creative music making apps aQWERTYon,[12] GroovePizza,[13] and Variation Playgrounds.[14]

In Summer 2018, the MusEDLab opened a second branch at the NYU Shanghai campus working under the Program on Creativity and Innovation led by Adam G. Brandenburger.
