Johanna Masko
Johanna Masko (née Juby) is an American-Canadian quilt designer and fiber artist. She is known for modern quilting designs inspired by vintage objects and an emphasis on technique.
Early life[edit]
Born in southeastern Michigan, she attended the University of Michigan School of Art and Design where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and the University of Toronto from which she received a Bachelor of Education. She has been sewing since childhood and comes from a long line of creative artists in her family, including painters and clothing makers.[citation needed]
Career[edit]
She has exhibited and taught at the Modern Quilt Guild's international QuiltCon,[1] Quilt Xtravaganza (QuiltX),[2] Creative Sewing Festival,[3] Silo Weavers for Contemporary Quilts Show,[4]
Johanna's style has been said to be a hybrid between traditional and modern quilts.[5] Her teaching incorporates innovative simplification of quilting methods,[6][7] and she has an array of simple designs that make her work highly accessible. Her Donuts pattern has been used by many online crafts bloggers.[8][9][10][11] She has also influenced and mentored other textile artists, including Libs Elliot.[12]
At QuiltX she presented Wireless, a quilt which features zigzag patterns representing radio waves and electrical currents, and the cartoon figure Reddy Kilowatt.[5][13]
For the Bata Shoe Museum's exhibit "Fashion Victims: Pleasures and Perils of Dress in the 19th Century," she conducted a workshop on needlepoint.[14]
She also works in millinery, handbag design, paper arts, including quilling and lithography.
Awards[edit]
She is a three time winner of the prestigious National Juried Show Award of the Canadian Quilters Association (CQA), winning first place in 2008 for Downriver Industrial.[15]
