Alexander Mirza is a Canadian-American business executive, entrepreneur, investor, and author. His career has focused on leading growth and innovation, revitalizing global brands, and scaling start-ups. He has held senior executive positions at Fortune 500, publicly traded and private equity-backed companies, including Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Hilton Worldwide, Ticketmaster Entertainment, and Caesars Entertainment Corporation.[1]

As an entrepreneur, he co-founded and served as CEO of venture capital and family office-backed start-ups, including Mogul Hospitality.[2][3] and Cachet Hotel Group.

Early life and education

Mirza holds a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.[3] He was awarded the John H. McArthur Canadian Fellowship.[4] He also holds a B.A. (Honours) and an M.A. from Queen's University at Kingston, Canada,[5][6] where he was an Aga Khan Foundation Scholar and graduated with First Class Standing.[7] His master's thesis, Peacekeeping, Peacemaking, & World Order: A Study of the International System, examined reform of the United Nations system.[8]

Career

Over a career spanning more than 30 years, Mirza has worked as a management consultant, corporate executive, and entrepreneur across the technology, travel, hospitality, and entertainment industries.

Management consulting

His management consulting experience started at Braxton Associates, the strategy consulting practice of Deloitte Consulting.[1] At Deloitte, he co-authored a World Economic Forum (Davos) study on innovative leaders in globalization for the firm's chairman.[9] He later served as a senior principal at Strategos, the innovation consultancy founded by London Business School professor Gary Hamel.[10][11] There he helped large companies turn employee ideas into funded internal ventures, including through Shell's GameChanger program, which launched new businesses in its renewables division.[12]

Corporate career

Transitioning from consulting, Mirza joined Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide in strategic planning and was promoted to lead the department responsible for corporate strategy and brand innovation.[13][5][14] Hilton Hotels Corporation later named him to the newly created position of senior vice president, corporate development.[5] At Hilton, Mirza helped develop and launch the company's luxury brand, Waldorf Astoria, in 2006 with the Waldorf-Astoria in New York and three resorts: the Arizona Biltmore, La Quinta Resort & Club, and the Grand Wailea on Maui.[1][15][16][17] Mirza also led Hilton's food and beverage division, bringing celebrity-chef and branded restaurant concepts into its hotels.[15] He negotiated an exclusive partnership with Napa Valley restaurateur Donna Scala to develop signature casual dining concepts for Hilton's full-service hotels, beginning with the Urban Tavern at the Hilton San Francisco,[18] and struck a partnership with Fox Sports Grill to bring the chain into Hilton hotels, beginning with the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, the chain's first hotel location.[19][20] He also brought Drago's, a New Orleans seafood restaurant, into the Hilton New Orleans Riverside.[21] He formed the company's first fitness and spa division and led a partnership with Precor that introduced branded fitness centers across Hilton's full-service hotels in North America.[22][23][24] He established the Waldorf Astoria brand's luxury spa partnership with LVMH brands Guerlain and Acqua di Parma, including a flagship spa at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.[25][9] In 2008, Mirza told Travel Weekly that Hilton was developing distinct spa concepts for each of its brands and expected its roughly 70 spas to double within three years.[26]

From 2008 to 2009, Mirza was senior vice president of corporate development at Ticketmaster Entertainment, where he worked on the company's merger with Live Nation.[27][28]

In 2010, Mirza joined Caesars Entertainment as vice president and executive associate to Gary Loveman, then chairman and CEO.[29] In 2011, Caesars promoted him to head of Caesars Hospitality Ventures, overseeing its hotel, restaurant, and nightlife businesses, including Caesars Global Life, a new unit created to develop branded luxury properties worldwide.[29][30][31] The division planned to expand into Asia through hotel licensing and franchising, focusing on the luxury and lifestyle segments.[30] He worked on Caesars' partnership with Nobu Matsuhisa, which produced the world's first Nobu Hotel, a boutique hotel inside Caesars Palace that opened in 2013, which Caesars described as the first celebrity chef-branded hotel.[32][33][29] He also led the negotiation of several lifestyle restaurant brand partnerships for Caesars,[9] a period that included agreements for chef Gordon Ramsay's first Las Vegas restaurant, Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Las Vegas,[34] and for four restaurant concepts from New York-based BR Guest Hospitality.[32]

Entrepreneurship

In 2013, Mirza co-founded Cachet Hotel Group and served as its chief executive officer.[35][36][37][38][15] The company raised several rounds of capital from investors in the United States, the Middle East and China, including a strategic equity investment from a UAE-based investment group in 2016.[15][35][39][40]

Cachet's portfolio was built around two Shanghai properties: URBN Hotel, China's first carbon-neutral hotel,[41][42] which came under Cachet's full ownership,[43][44] and JIA Shanghai, a boutique hotel in a 1920s building in central Shanghai that Cachet converted into its flagship, Cachet Boutique Shanghai.[45][46]

Cachet signed hotel projects across China, including in Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Qingdao, Kunming and Baoji, as well as a resort in Guizhou province,[47][48][49][50][51][52][53] and in 2016 opened Cachet Boutique Zhejiang Circuit, a 52-room hotel beside an FIA-certified motor-racing circuit in Shaoxing.[54][55]

In 2015, Cachet opened a Southeast Asia headquarters in Bangkok, which also housed its in-house design studio, Cachet Interior Design (CID), and supported the region's hotels with interior design, digital platforms and pre-opening teams.[56][57] In Thailand, the company developed a Cachet hotel at Smile Square in Bangkok; the SAVANT Vela Hotel, the first property of its affordable lifestyle brand; and Cachet Resort Dewa Phuket, a resort conversion renovated by CID. It also targeted further Thai locations, including Chiang Mai and Koh Samui.[58][59][60][61][57]

In the Americas, Cachet partnered with the owners of Cabo Villas Beach Resort & Spa to reposition the property as Cachet Corazon, a beachfront resort on Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas, within walking distance of the marina.[62][63] Cachet opened the 77-room Cachet Beach Hotel and beach club at the resort,[64][65][66] and with the owners closed a construction loan from Banco Sabadell to build a new 204-room tower,[67][66] which is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council under the LEED v4 rating system for hospitality.[68][62] In the United States, Cachet opened Cachet Boutique NYC in 2017, a 105-room conversion of an existing hotel in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen.[69][70]

Alongside its hotels, Cachet built a restaurant business with standalone venues. Chef David Laris, Cachet's chief creative officer, led its food and beverage program,[71] and under his direction the company opened Porterhouse by Laris in 2015 in Hong Kong's California Tower in the Lan Kwai Fong district, with further openings planned in Shanghai and other Chinese cities.[72][73] Cachet also formed a joint venture with Invest Hospitality, a developer of L'Atelier de Joรซl Robuchon restaurants, to bring celebrity-chef restaurant concepts to Asia,[74] and announced a joint venture to bring the Wahlburgers restaurant chain to Asia.[75]

In 2018, Mirza co-founded Mogul Hospitality, a venture-backed technology company focused on the hospitality industry, and became its chief executive officer.[2] Its flagship product, MogulRecruiter, was an AI-powered hospitality talent marketplace that ranked hotel employees and employers using service and performance data.[76] In 2020, the company raised $20 million in a funding round led by its largest seed investor, the venture firm L37.[2] KiwiTech, which partnered with Mogul to build the MogulRecruiter platform, was also an investor.[77][78] In September 2021, Mirza discussed MogulRecruiter in an interview with the CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association Foundation.[79] In November 2021, Mogul advanced to the finals of the first Phocuswright/WIT Global Startup Pitch.[80] In 2022, the company launched Mogul Hotels and Residences, a hotel brand built around employee ownership, in which front-line employees and supervisors would become shareholders in each property.[17] That year, Mogul was a finalist in the Harvard Business School New Venture Competition.[81]

In 2025, Mirza was appointed chief executive officer of Carey International, a global mobility and transportation company.[28][82][83] In an interview with Skift following his appointment, Mirza outlined a strategy focused on technology and AI-based personalization as part of Carey's efforts to modernize its mobility services.[28] In January 2026, Carey reintroduced one of its original vintage logos as the anchor of a refreshed brand identity, alongside an AI strategy that Mirza described as using technology to augment, rather than replace, human service.[84]

Speaker

Mirza was a featured speaker at the 2021 Phocuswright Conference, the 2020 HEDNA Global Distribution Conference, and the 2023 Boutique Lifestyle Lodging Association (BLLA) conference.[85][27][86] He has also been a featured speaker at the NYU International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference, the China HVS Hotel Investment Conference, and Cornell hospitality events, and has moderated CEO panels at the Harvard Real Estate Conference.

In October 2023, Mirza appeared with Cornell University professor David Sherwyn in the eCornell keynote Navigating the Talent Disruption: Leveraging AI to Operate the Hotel of the Future. The discussion addressed the application of artificial intelligence to labor shortages, human capital, and hotel operations.[1]

Board Member & Strategic Advisor

Mirza is a Strategic Advisor and Advisory Board member of KiwiTech,[87] a U.S.-India software development and AI engineering firm. He previously served on the Management Advisory Board of the Cornell Center for Innovative Hospitality Labor and Employment Relations (CIHLER).[7] He is a former board director of Cachet Hotel Group, Wahlburgers Asia-Pacific, Ticketmaster China, and Ticketmaster Australia.

Recognition

Canadian Business magazine profiled Mirza in 2006 and named him one of Canada's top 10 international executives.[88] In 2015, HOTELS magazine featured him in its first People Issue, which profiled a dozen up-and-coming hoteliers.[15] In 2016, Cachet's president of operations for the Americas, who had worked with Mirza at Hilton and Caesars, described him as a strong supporter of women who makes a point of hiring women into management positions.[89] In 2020, Harvard Business School published a case study on Mirza's career, Alexander Mirza 1997, by Anthony J. Mayo and Keith Bender, for teaching in organizational behavior.[90] In 2022, the International Hospitality Institute named him to its list of the 100 Most Powerful People in USA Hospitality.[91]

In 2024, Harvard Business School's alumni publication profiled his career and his work on AI-driven hospitality technology in the article Rooms with a View.[3] Harvard in Tech, a Harvard alumni group focused on technology, also featured his AI-driven approach to hospitality talent.[92]

In his early twenties, Mirza received the City of Toronto's Mayor's Volunteer Creed for organizing and coaching sports leagues for inner-city youth. At Queen's University, he was elected president of the Queen's International Affairs Association, one of the university's largest and oldest student organizations, which won debating awards at Harvard University under his leadership.[6][93]

Author

Mirza is the author of two books, Talent Disruption: People Are the Brands: Leveraging AI to Scale Human Capital,[94] and Reimagining Global Hospitality: Envisaging the AI Hotel of the Future.[95][96] Talent Disruption draws on research by Mogul's data scientists into hospitality labor trends and career patterns, and proposes AI-driven talent marketplaces to address labor shortages and build human capital in service industries.[97] The book was endorsed by business leaders and academics including former Caesars Entertainment chairman and CEO Gary Loveman and Harvard Business School professor Leonard Schlesinger, co-author of The Service Profit Chain.[97][98]

Beyond his books, Mirza has written for business and policy publications. On artificial intelligence and talent, he has written for Hotel Executive[99], Hospitality Net[100] and Architecture & Governance Magazine, including on responsible AI and its role in global power dynamics.[101] On leadership diversity in hospitality, he has written for Entrepreneur[102] and Minority Business Entrepreneur.[103] On Canadian economic and tourism policy, he has written op-eds for the Toronto Star[11] and The Queen's Journal[104] and a policy brief for the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a think tank based in Waterloo, Ontario, proposing measures to strengthen Canadian ownership of hotel brands, intellectual property and tourism data.[4]

Personal life

Mirza is married to Barbara Mirza, a partner and board member at Cooley LLP, where she leads the firm's global compensation and benefits practice.[105][106] She previously practised at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom[107] and has written on international women's human rights law.[108][109] They have a daughter.[6] His brother, Faisal Mirza, a judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario,[110][111] is the author of Criminal Jury Charge Practice[112], teaches law at the University of Toronto, and was previously appointed by the Prime Minister of Canada to the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency.[113]
