Alexander Rumpf (8. April 1928 at Karlsruhe – 1 December 1980 at Remscheid) was a German conductor. He was a student of Herbert von Karajan. He is not related to the German conductor Alexander Rumpf, born in Stuttgart in 1958.[1]
Life and Work[edit]
Alexander Rumpf studied church music and conducting at the Badische Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe and privately with the German conductor Otto Matzerath.[1]
In 1954 he became a solo coach at the Pforzheim City Theater. In 1959 he completed training with Herbert von Karajan, as his assistant he worked from 1963 to 1964. In 1961 he became first conductor at the Theater des Westens in Berlin. In 1964 he became chief conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo and in 1966 city music director in Remscheid. In 1971 he became general music director there.[1]
Introducing young people to Classical music was not only important to him in Remscheid. "His school concerts and, above all, the tried and tested workshop concerts were milestones in this endeavor."[2]
At the end of the 1970s, Alexander Rumpf fell seriously ill. As a result, guest conductors often had to be hired for the Remscheid Orchestra during this period, until Christoph Stepp, the former director of the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz in Ludwigshafen, took over provisional leadership of the Remscheid Orchestra from August 1980. After the death of Alexander Rumpf, Stepp finally took over the management of the orchestra in August 1981.[3]
