Alexander Scherbakov also Aleksandr Konstantinovich Sherbakov (Russian: Александр Константинович Щербаков born June 23 1982 in Moscow, Russia) is a Russian and Swiss classical musician, violinist, conductor and violin pedagogue living in Zürich.

Education[edit]

Alexander Scherbakov was born in Moscow, Russia into a family of musicians. His father, pianist Konstantin Scherbakov and mother Nina Orotchko provided the first musical impulse and have continued to nurture their son musically throughout his younger years, although aged 6, he started taking violin lessons officially at the ГОСУДАРСТВЕННОЕ БЮДЖЕТНОЕ УЧРЕЖДЕНИЕ ДОПОЛНИТЕЛЬНОГО ОБРАЗОВАНИЯ ГОРОДА МОСКВЫ "ДЕТСКАЯ МУЗЫКАЛЬНАЯ ШКОЛА ИМЕНИ А.Н. Alexander Scherbakov has studied under a number of teachers such as [1] Elemer Glanz, Detlef Hahn - Violin Professor Dethlef Hahn, Oleh Krysa and Remembering Alice Schoenfeld Alice Schoenfeld while regularly taking masterclasses with Zakhar Bron, Vladimir Spivakov, Gerhard Schulz (Musiker) Gerhard Schultz, György Pauk, Felix Andrievsky Felix Andrievsky and others. After his parents immigrated to Switzerland from Russia in 1991, he was submitted to the Purcell School for Young Musicians in London where he started his professional music education in 1995 and had meanwhile performed for HRH Charles, Prince of Wales and the Royal Family Order of Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle. He has received higher musical education in New York at the Eastman School of Music and in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California USC Thornton School of Music.

Personal[edit]

Since finishing his studies, Alexander Scherbakov has returned.[1] to Switzerland where he currently lives with his wife and pianist[2]Madalina Slav. Together they have a son, Maxim Alexandrovich Scherbakov[3]. They live with a family of six Cocker Spaniels[4]

Professional[edit]

After achieving top places in several violin competitions between 1995 and 2003, he has continued on his professional path, playing in venues such as the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Suntory Hall Tokyo, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Tonhalle, Zürich, Eastman Theatre Rochester, Auckland Town Hall, Romanian Athenaeum, Bridgewater Hall, Elbphilharmonie, Teatro Colón. Working with some of the world's finest orchestras under Michael Tilson Thomas, Charles Dutoit, Simon Rattle, John Williams, he has received guidance in conducting from Justus Frantz and gathered experience as his assistant with the Philharmonie der Nationen. He has later been assistant to David Stern (conductor) and the Orchester | Theater St.Gallen Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen.

In Switzerland, he has founded several musical projects including a concert seasonSonaten-Sternstunde. | NZZ „Sternstunden“ with his wife Madalina Slav in Zollikon, leading his own virtuoso string orchestra in Zurich and organizing an[5]international string competition in Bischofszell. In 2009 he performed the Six Johann Sebastian Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin (Bach) as part of the Alexander Scherbakov auf Konzerttournée tour of 10 village churches in the Swiss Canton of Thurgau by the example of Yehudi Menuhin.

He has dedicated himself to educating the new generations of musicians around the world following the traditions of the Russian Violin School of Leopold Auer Скрипач и педагог Леопольд Ауэр through teaching and lecturing at many schools and universities such as College of Music, Mahidol University, Srinakharinwirot University, University of Tasmania, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, National College of Music G. Enescu, Bucharest Colegiul Național de Muzică „George Enescu”, Musikschule MuriMusik macht Spass, where he was a teacher between 2011 and 2013, Home Musikschule Bischofszell, Geschenk an Wohngemeinde donating substantially towards its new building in 2009. He is often invited to give masterclasses in Asia including music universities and high schools in Tokyo, Osaka, Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Taipei, Guangjzhou, Seoul.

Various alternative music projects have made an impact on Scherbakov, while living in Los Angeles he has worked on movie sounds with Hans Zimmer and recorded the Men in Black II soundtrack with Will Smith. He has performed a Christmas and New Years concert on the Residensea followed by the Guinness World Records Firework display in the port of Funchal and appeared in family concerts on the openair stage in the Sapporo art park.[6]
