Alfa Sa'adu, OFR (31 August 1952 - 31 March 2020[1]) was an English-Nigerian medical doctor who held a chieftaincy title Galadiman Patigi.

Biography[edit]

Born in Pategi in north central Nigeria,[2] he was brought up in London. He was the first son of former Northern Minister of Health, Ahman Pategi who served in the administration of Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto.[3][4] He started his early school in 1960 at Manorside school, North Finchley and then further schooling in Shropshire, finishing in 1970. He then studied anatomy at University College London in 1973 and University College Hospital Medical School in 1976 and became a medical doctor.[2][3][5]

He was a senior officer in 1979 at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and returned home to serve the National Youth Service at Ahmadu Bello University teaching hospital in 1979. He became a nurse at the Federal Medical Center Bida taking over from foreign doctors and worked in Kwara State federal medical centre.[6][7]

In 1984 he returned to London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for a Master's degree in clinical tropical medicine, before subsequently completing a PhD in tropical and infectious diseases. He then trained as MRC research registrar on clinical immunology and allergy in 1992, and geriatric medicine at University College Hospital London in 1994.[1][5]

In the same year he was appointed as consultant physician in care of elderly medicine at Watford General Hospital. In 2004 he became deputy director of medical at West Hertfordshire Hospital NHS Trust, and was an elected member in the NHS East of England innovation council (2011 - 2014).[8][6][2]

He was executive director at Ealing Hospital NHS Trust in 2015 and director in Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust for Medicine Healthcare Group and retired in 2017.[8][9] He died from COVID-19 on 31 March 2020 after two weeks with the disease, being the fourth doctor in Britain to die of Covid-19.[10][11] Before his demise he returned to Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital, Hertfordshire to help battle against Covid-19 there he was part-time medical consultant after 40 years medical services and was the chairman (Kwasang) in United Kingdom a diaspora from his home town.[12][9] He also lecture African regions doctors in world of medicine.[2]

He was married to a british medical doctor, with two son and one daughter.[13][12]
