Alfred B. Mantey was an American soldier and casket salesman from Albany, New York. He served in the United States Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart for his service in the Pacific theater.[citation needed] Wikipedia is not a memorial. Early life
Mantey was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Alfred Mantey and Lena (née Warner). Alfred grew up in Downtown Albany, NY. In the 8th grade, Alfred dropped out of school and began work at a downtown Albany bologna factory.
Career
In Albany, Mantey worked as a salesman for the National Casket Company on Central Avenue. He also worked as a bartender at the Orchard Tavern, a long-standing establishment in Albany.[citation needed]
Military service
During World War II, Mantey served in the United States Army and was deployed to the Pacific theater. For his actions in combat he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.[citation needed]
Battle of Eniwetok
Mantey took part in the Battle of Eniwetok in February 1944, when U.S. forces captured the atoll from Japanese defenders.[citation needed]
Battle of Saipan
He later participated in the Battle of Saipan in June–July 1944, one of the critical campaigns in the Mariana Islands.[citation needed]
Battle of Okinawa
In 1945, Mantey was involved in the Battle of Okinawa, the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific War and among the final major battles before Japan's surrender.[citation needed]
Memberships and honors
Mantey is recognized in the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and was a member of the Joseph E. Zaloga American Legion Post 1520 in Albany.[citation needed]
In May of 2024, Mantey was honored by Albany County for his service and May 6th, 2025 was renamed Alfred B Mantey Day in Albany, NY.
