Alfred Clarke (mycologist)

Alfred Clarke (1848-1925) was an English mycologist and chemist who spend the majority of his life in Huddersfield. He was the first recorder of fungi for the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union and a founding member of the British Mycological Society.

Originally from Winchester, he moved to Huddersfield as a young man and quickly became an assistant to George Jarmain at the Huddersfield Mechanical Institute (later Huddersfield Technical College).

He was a key figure in the merging of the Huddersfield Naturalists' Society and the Huddersfield Photography Society.

His sizeable collection of plant and fungal specimens, illustrations, photography, and library are currently held at Tolson Museum.
