Alfred Schwarzschild (29 October 1874 in Frankfurt – 19 August 1948 in London) was a German artist and illustrator.

Life[edit]

Alfred Schwarzschild was born on 1874 in Frankfurt on Main. His father war Moses Martin Schwarzschild and his mother Henriette Ottilie Sabel. The family was active in the business community of the city, and the Schwarzschilds had ancestors in the city dating back to the sixteenth century. One of his brothers is the astronomer Karl Schwarzschild, his cousin Leopold Schwarzschild was an author.

Since he was a child Alfred showed great talent towards art. From 1890 to 1892 he studied under Anton Burger in Kronberg later on the went to the Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe.

1893 he moved to Munich with his Brother Karl. While his brother Karl was studying at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Alfred studied art at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. He attended the classes of Professor Gabriel von Hackl than he changed to the class of ProfessorWilhelm von Diez

He lived in those day in the district Maxvorstadt and he shared his studio with the artist Albert Weisgerber.

From 1901 an Alfred Schwarzschild took part of the International Artexhibition in the royal Glaspalast (Munich). 1901 he was rewarded with a Medal for his oilpainting "Übermut". 1905–1909 he also took regularly part of the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung.

During World War I he joined the Imperial German Flying Corps as an observer.

1924 he married Theodora Luttner und had thre doughters. With his family he lived in the elegant district Bogenhausen where he had his studio.

He became a portraitist of the upper middle class of Munich, his pictures were regularly discussed in the art magazines of the time.

His stile is very influenced of the Munich Jugendstil and goes from Realism to Neue Sachlichkeit

When the National Socialists came to power, Alfred's professional life became increasingly difficult because of his jewish origin

Alfred Schwarzschild made his way with the design of souvenir postcards. He created a series of postcards with the Münchner Kindl as a motif, a series of postcards on the theme Oktoberfest and a series on the famous restaurant Hofbräuhaus. Often his youngest daughter served as a model. Some of these postcards are now being printed again and sold in souvenir shops.

In 1936 he fled to England. Alfred Schwarzschild was briefly interned on the Isle of Man.

1937 he bravely returned to Germany to save his wife and his tree daughters. The Schwarzschild family suceeded to fled to England.

Alfred spent the rest of his life in London until he died in 1948.
