Ali R. Tayyeb (born 1973) is an American nurse, educator, and veteran health advocate. A United States Navy veteran, he served as a Fleet Marine Force corpsman with Naval Medical Center San Diego and the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions.[1][2] He is known for co-authoring the 2017 Costs of War report on so-called "bad paper" discharges and their impact on veterans' access to benefits,[3] and for hosting the RN-Mentor Podcast.[4] He was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2023[5] and received the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Pioneering Spirit Award in 2025.[6]
Early life and education
Tayyeb earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from California State University, Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. from the University of San Diego.[7][8]
Military service
Tayyeb served in the United States Navy as a Hospital corpsman and earned the Fleet Marine Force (FMF) warfare designation. His assignments included Naval Medical Center San Diego and the 1st Marine Division and 3rd Marine Division.[9][10]
Career
Tayyeb has held academic and educational roles, including at California State University, Los Angeles.[11] He hosts the RN-Mentor Podcast, which features interviews with nursing leaders and educators.[12] In 2023, Working Nurse reported that ANA\California launched a "Veterans Health Campaign" in partnership with Tayyeb to raise awareness of veterans' health issues among civilian nurses.[13] Conference and association materials have also described him as a consultant to the Los Angeles County Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.[14]
Research and advocacy
As part of Brown University's Costs of War project, Tayyeb co-authored a 2017 report on the growth and consequences of "bad paper" military discharges, arguing that such discharges can restrict access to Department of Veterans Affairs benefits and services.[15] The report and its findings have been cited in media and legal analyses of veterans' access to care and discharge upgrades.[16][17][18][19]
Art and advocacy
In 2020–2021, Los Angeles–area outlets covered Tayyeb's memorial art honoring health-care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.[20][21]
