Alia Marie Martin (born June 9, 1998) is an American soccer defender for the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League (NSWL). She played college soccer at Michigan and was named a first team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches in 2021.

Early life[edit]

Martin attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, where she helped lead Brebeuf Jesuit to the Indiana State title in 2015 and a runner-up finish in 2016.[1] She was named the Gatorade Indiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year in 2015, and the Indiana Sports Awards Girls Soccer Player of the Year in 2016.[2][3] She was also named a four-time First Team All-State, and First Team All-District honoree, and a two-time NSCAA High School All-American.[4][5]

College career[edit]

Martin signed with the University of Michigan on February 6, 2017.[6] On August 21, 2019, she was named a captain for the 2019 season.[7]

As a graduate student in 2021, she started all 20 matches she played in, totaling 1,797 minutes of action, and contributed two assists while committing only four fouls.[4] During the 2021 Big Ten Tournament, she anchored a Michigan defense that allowed just two goals in three tournament matches to help Michigan win their first Big Ten Tournament since 1999.[8] She was subsequently named to the All-Tournament team and the Defensive Player of the Tournament.[9]

Following the season she was named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, the third Wolverine in program history to become a semifinalist for the award.[10] She was also named a first team All-Big Ten honoree for the third consecutive year, and a first team All-America selection by the United Soccer Coaches, becoming the second first-team selection in program history and ninth overall.[11][12]

Professional career[edit]

On December 18, 2021, the Washington Spirit signed Martin to a one-year contract, with a club option for 2023.[13][14]

Personal life[edit]

Alia was born to Michael and Tamara Martin, and has one brother and one sister. Her sister, Reilly, was also a member of the Michigan women's soccer team.[4]
