Alice Dowson

Alice Dowson was born in 1844 and, in her 83 years (died 1927), was a Suffragette, an activist who achieved social reform for women’s equality [1]. While young, she was a leading member of the ‘National Society for the Abolition of the State Regulation of Vice’[2]. To repeal a law that represented some women’s economic participation as liable to physical assaults for tests of ‘fitness’ and ‘cleanliness’, through the ‘Contagious Diseases Acts’ (repealed 1886)[3]. Alice founded the ‘Lenton Visiting and Relief Society’ and was secretary for the ‘Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children’ (Ladies’ Committee), as well as being a member of the ‘Nottingham Social Guild’[4]. She was the Honorary Secretary of the ‘Nottingham Women’s Suffrage Society’ (affiliated to the ‘National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) – leader Millicent Garrett Fawcett) [5]. Also attended the ‘Women’s Social & Political Union’ (WSPU) (leader - Emmeline Pankhurst) against police brutality and force-feeding of women political prisoners. Married to Benjamin, also a supporter of women’s equality, they had 10 children and the eldest (William) also married a fellow social reformer, Helena (Nellie) Brownsword Dowson [6].[7]
