Montauto Wildlife Foundation
Set in a midland territory, between the volcanic Bolsena Lake and the Tyrrhenian Sea, this slice of Maremma is a rural territory contested by nature and people since early prehistoric civilizations. Surmounting the hill stands the medieval Castle of Montauto, serving as a defensive outpost of the Republic of Siena at the edge with the Papal State. This is the land where Etruscans had established the epic city of Vulci and where the last empress of the Eastern Roman Empire once tried to found a Roman colony.
