History[edit]

Alkemy X was founded as Shooters Inc. in 1981 by cinematographers Dave West and Craig Needleman, and sound mixer Jay Hartigan.[1] Originally located in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, it moved to Philadelphia in 2001. In 2006, it formed Shooters TV, a division devoted to producing original content. Shooters TV produced several unscripted television series for Food Network, including Dinner: Impossible [2] and Restaurant: Impossible.[3]

In 2006, the company formed a visual effects unit named DIVE.[4] It produced visual effects for films including The Last Airbender,[4] I Am Number Four [5] and Dead Man Down,[6] as well as television series including Power, The Leftovers [7] and Do No Harm. The company opened Shooters NYC, a production and visual effect studio, in New York City in 2011.[8]

In 2014, the company rebranded as Alkemy X, merging all its divisions into one company.[9] Since then, its original content division has produced the series Unique Rides for Discovery [10] and The 212 for Fuse,[11] and the special Drag Me Down the Aisle for TLC,[12] among other projects. Its visual effects division has contributed to AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, NBC’s Blindspot, HBO’s The Leftovers, Netflix’s Maniac and Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, among other shows.[13] It has also produced advertising, branded media and social content for companies including BMW, Pepsi, Virginia Tourism,[14] Panera, Sea Shepherd,[15] Lexus, Google and Samsung.[16]

In 2016, Attorney Justin Wineburgh became CEO of the company,[17] having previously served as outside counsel, and its Los Angeles studio opened. [18] Wineburgh became its sole shareholder in 2018.
