History[edit]

The Allegro Network Multimeter was developed by Allegro Packets GmbH, a company founded in 2014. The purpose of the founders was to develop portable and passive hardware, which can be connected at any place in a network, to display network traffic.

Two years after company formation, in 2016, the portable troubleshooting appliance 'Allegro 200' was launched. In 2017, appliances for 10 G and 40 G networks followed, and in 2018 for 100 G environments.[1]

In 2018, Allegro Packets received the German Data Center Award in the category 'Network Infrastructure'. Also in 2018, Allegro Packets opened a branch office in the United Kingdom.[2]

Specifications[edit]

The Allegro Network Multimeters can be installed inline or in bridge mode at any point in the network. They display and record statistics and correlations of network traffic across Layers 2 - 7 of the OSI model in real-time and from historical data.

The way the devices store packets is the use of two different storage systems: On the one hand for storing the metadata of processed packets, the Allegro Network Multimeter uses an In-memory database. On the other hand all received packets are stored on the integrated packet ring buffer. If the packet ring buffer is full, the oldest packets are overwritten by the latest. The data stored on the packet ring buffer enables historical targeted extraction of network data. This allows to generate overviews and statistics down to the millisecond level on a wide range of performance parameters, e.g. MAC, IP addresses, VLANs, ERSPAN, VoIP and other network protocols such as TCP, SIP, RTP and SSL. In addition, the devices allow selective pcap extraction for subsequent analysis with tools such as Wireshark.[3]
