Early life[edit]
Day began writing computer programs as a child after getting his first computer at the age of five. He studied biology and Mandarin at the University of Oregon and graduated in the year 2000. [2] After graduation, he undertook a PhD in human genetics at the University of California Los Angeles’ (UCLA) Geffen School of Medicine, where he helped create a computer programme which could browse the human genome.[1] While studying at UCLA, Day began to utilise distributed computing, and created a network of small computers to analyse the large data which make up the human genome. In 2016, Google hired DDayto work in the health and bioinformatics areas of their business. His work involved increasing rice yields using and AI sequencing genomes for infectious diseases. While at Google, Day shifted to his focus blockchains for their distributed computing capabilities.[2]
Career[edit]
In 2018, Day and an open-source development team at Google started loading data from the Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains into BigQuery. He then worked alongside developer Evgeny Medvedev to create a software suite capable of searching through the data. The project, known as Blockchain ETL (extract, transform, load), attracted computer coders interested in cryptocurrencies. These developers used the tools to create five-hundred projects ranging from bitcoin price prediction to wealth disparity analysis.[2] Supposedly, the software allowed users to make generalised searches of transactions instead of just searching for specific transactions.[3]
