Allgo
Allgo, standing for Austin Latino/Latina Lesbian and Gay Organization at the time of its founding, is an organization in Austin, Texas that advocates for queer people of color.[1].
Background of Allgo[2]
Allgo was founded in 1985 in Austin, Texas by a group of Latino LGBTQ+ activists. The founders felt that in order to be open about their sexual identity and address issues important to them, this organization needed to be created. It is a 501c3 non-profit grass-roots organization, which focuses on issues relating to LGBTQ+ people of color[1]. Allgo also provides a safe space to celebrate aspects such as cultures, arts, and gender and sexual identities of queer people of color. It is also the only organization in Austin that serves specifically queer people of color[1].
Mission Of Allgo On BIPOC Queer Organizing In Austin
Austin channels a diverse and welcoming environment for BIPOC and queer communities, but several components are in need of development that Allgo’s services can offer.
Allgo’s programming consists of four strands. The first is multi-issue action teams focusing on anti-violence, reproductive justice, immigrant and refugee rights, and sexual freedom. The second is a constructive network of queer POC activists, organizations, and allies. The third focuses on encouraging cultural arts. Finally, the fourth is a more specific goal within the organization, organizing an annual statewide activist summit[3]
Using these four strands, Allgo can add to the vitality of the BIPOC and queer organizing communities in Austin.
Allgo's Opportunities for BIPOC Queer Organizing In Austin
Additionally, Allgo offers employment opportunities. For each position, they strongly encourage those who speak and write Spanish fluently, people of color, and people part of the LGBTQ+ community, to apply. That being said, Allgo is an equal opportunity employer, valuing all those who apply regardless of sex, race, religion, sexuality, and more. They open up doors and new work experiences[4] for anyone interested. Overall, Allgo serves as an organization to serve and provide a community for those who need it.
