Alliance of British Drivers

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Alliance of British Drivers (ABD) is a motoring advocacy group in the United Kingdom. It is occasionally quoted by British news media in stories regarding road safety, motoring taxation, road infrastructure provision, and other related issues.[1][2][3]

Formation

The ABD was formed in 2012 by the merger of the Association of British Drivers and the Drivers' Alliance. The Association of British Drivers was an organisation that dated back to 1993, when it was formed as a membership based, not-for-profit organisation by Brian Gregory. The Drivers' Alliance, which had been formed to oppose road pricing, was founded in 2008 by Peter Roberts.[4] Peter Roberts had been responsible for creating an e-petition against road pricing which with more than 1.7 million signatories.[5][6]

Criticism

In 2004, the then chief constable of North Wales Police, Richard Brunstrom, described the Association of British Drivers as an "unduly influential … pressure group." He added, "They have less than 3,000 members, yet they are given enormous attention by the media. … It's ludicrous — this is a bunch of crackpots being given prime airtime. It's just because the media love a controversy."[7]

In 2020, Alan Wenban-Smith, visiting professor of Planning at Birmingham City University and a consultant in urban and regional policy, described ABD as "climate change sceptics," who promote the idea that "climate science is not sufficiently robust to bear the weight placed upon it by decarbonisation." Wenban-Smith characterised the group as "lobbyists with obvious axes to grind, who have found ‘stuff on the internet’ from eccentrics and obsessives," and hold "biased and fringe views." He compared those views to "Andrew Wakefield’s unsubstantiated claims linking MMR vaccine to autism."[8]
