Alma Grace Barla is an indigenous tribal journalist and activist from the Indian state of Odisha.
Early life
Alma Grace was born in the indigenous tribal (also known as Adivasi in India) dominant village of Sundargarh district in Odisha state of eastern India. Her family belonged to the Oraon tribe.[1] She has experienced the struggles of rural women in accessing education, employment and other infrastructure. Therefore, she has been advocating for the rights and empowerment of tribal communities, particularly in her various capacities. She also takes an interest in reflecting Indian history and documenting the oral traditions of various tribes across regions and throughout history.
Career
In 2004, Barla started her career as a journalist with the Indian Currents national weekly published from Delhi. Working as a journalist, she confronted a number of cases of violence perpetrated on young tribal girls and women working as domestic help in Delhi, and in the neighbouring states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh etc. Moved by the regularly reported incidences of economic exploitation, rape, molestation, physical and mental torture, and mysterious deaths of tribal women domestic workers, she decided to work for their protection and welfare by voluntarily engaging herself with like-minded civil societies in Delhi.[2] [3]
