From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Alodokter is an Indonesian-based online health consultation service in the form of application and website. Since founded in July 2014, Alodokter has provided various services from providing health information, digitally connecting patients to doctors, as well as health insurance[1] Digital-based healthcare services that Alodokter offers among others are the chat with doctors feature, booking an appointment with a doctor, e-pharmacy, information/health articles, and insurance. Features most accessed by users are information and chat with doctors.[2] Since May 2020, Alodokter has supported the Indonesian Ministry of Health in providing health services of free online consultation with doctors for Covid-19 patients undergoing self-quarantine.[3]

History[edit]

Alodokter first launched its application in July 2014 under the banner of PT Sumo Teknologi Solusi[4] founded by Suci Arumsari, who also serves as President Director, and her partner Nathanael Faibis, who serves as CEO. The idea in founding Alodokter came from Arumsari's confusion and frustration over four years trying to find the right doctor who can treat her after she was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition in her spine. This led her to try and find a way to provide easier access for the Indonesian people to find the right medical professionals to treat them.[5]

Alodokter started with application that provided health and medical information, and later it developed into an application that digitally connects patients with doctors.

In 2017, Alodokter was ranked sixth in Tech in Asia's "Indonesia's 10 Best Funded Startups This Year" by raising US$9 million in funding.[6]

Up to 2021, Alodokter has reached 30 million active users per month with the support of 43.000 doctors.[7] During the Covid-19 pandemic, Alodokter has also provided public information and education services under the guidance of the government[8]

Funding[edit]

Alodokter received its seed funding of US$600,000 from 3 global venture capital firms; 500 Startups, Golden Gate Ventures, and Pegasus Tech Ventures with entrepreneur Lim Dershing in April 2015.[9] In the following years, it also received additional fundings from Golden Gate Ventures along with Lim Dershing and 500 Startups for US$2.5 million[10], US$9 million from SoftBank Ventures Korea[11], Series C funding from Sequis Life, Philips, Heritas Capital, Hera Capital, Dayli Partners, and others for US$33 million.[12]

In November 2020, Alodokter raised Series C Extension Funding from Telkom Group Indonesia subsidiary, MDI Ventures with undisclosed amount.[13] In June 2021, it raised fresh capital again from MDI Ventures and Samsung Ventures. Alodokter's CEO Nathanael Faibis said he hoped that by integrating Alodokter with Indonesian State-Owned Enterprises, they can provide technology-based healthcare access to more patients in Indonesia.[14]

Collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Health[edit]

Since May 2020, Alodokter has provided healthcare services in the form of free tele-consultation with doctors for COVID-19 patients undergoing self-quarantine with full support from the Indonesian Ministry of Health. This program was developed by the Ministry of Health and has become one of the Indonesian government's programs to provide free tele-consultation with doctors and medicines for COVID-19 patients who are under self-quarantine at home. 10 other telemedicine companies and partners are also participating in this program.[15]

After a trial run in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on July 7, 2021 this service has been expanded to include nearby cities such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi since July 14, 2021. This free telemedicine service starts from the process of Covid-19 testing in a laboratory up until confirmed positive patients who are required to self-quarantine receive their free medicines.[16] The Indonesian Ministry of Health itself plans on developing this COVID-19 telemedicine service gradually to cover all provincial capitals in Indonesia.[17]
