Álvaro Manuel Mendes Barbosa was born in Angola in 1970. He is a Scholar of Computer Science and Digital Communication, specialised in Sound Arts. Álvaro Barbosa has extensive experience in University management, serving in academic leadership positions since the late 90’s, and developing significant links between academic research and the Creative Industries.

In 1995 he graduated from the University of Aveiro and earned a degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering. Soon after, he studied Digital Sound and Music Design with the Computer Music Pioneer Curtis Roads, at the University of California Santa Barbara’s Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology. By 1999, he had received his Post-Graduate degree from the Catholic University of Portugal's School of Arts and in 2000 he earned an Advanced Studies Diploma (DEA) in Computer Science and Digital Communication from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

After 5 years as a resident researcher at the Barcelona Music Technology Group, under the supervision of Xavier Serra, Álvaro Barbosa received the Excellent Cum Laude honor for his European Doctorate degree in Computer Science and Digital Communication from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in the year 2006. During his followup Post-Doctorate research studies, at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), He collaborated very closely with Chris Chafe and many other renowned researchers. In 2011, the Catholic University of Portugal's School of Arts appointed him as their Associate Professor. With the same university, Álvaro Barbosa also completed his Habilitation Exam in 2015, which made it possible his appointment as Full Professor at the University of Saint Joseph by the age of 47 years old.

For 15 Years Álvaro Barbosa was the Head of the Sound and Image Department at the Catholic University of Portugal's School of Art. There he co-founded the school's Research Center for Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR), the Creative Business Incubator for ARTSpin and a Digital Creativity Center. Today, Álvaro Barbosa is the Vice-Rector for Strategic Development and Outreach at the University of Saint Joseph located in Macau, China, after serving 5 Years as Dean for the Faculty of Creative Industries at the same University.

During his career, he had the opportunity to publish academic research and travel to all continents of the world (including Antarctica) producing and presenting Digital Arts projects in the intersection of several artistic and Technological disciplines, such as, Electronic Music, Sound Design, Photography or Computer Animations. As a consequence of his long experience, Álvaro Barbosa got deeply involved in more generally broad topics of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, by mentoring, and consulting business startups, while continuously providing academic training on various aspects of Creativity, Design, Cultural Production, Media Communication and Business Development.
