Amanda Van Annan (November 28, 1982), is a British actress, model, and businesswoman. She is also known for appearing in the 2006 film Rag Tag, and for founding Great Light Entertainment.

Biography[edit]

Modelling career[edit]

Amanda Van Annan attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at the age of 16, where she was scouted by multiple modelling agencies before signing to Unique Model Management. She began modelling for Telegraph Magazine and Vidal Sassoon.[1] She has subsequently appeared in commercials for Revlon and in advertisements for Ebel and Woolworths Group. Over the course of her modelling career, she has appeared on the cover of magazines such as Elle, Vogue and Photo Magazine,[2] and was featured in magazines like Drum.[3]

Filmmaking and acting[edit]

Van Annan eventually joined the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Los Angeles and began studying acting.[1] She later founded the production company Great Light Entertainment.

She played the role of Ruqaya in the British-Nigerian drama Rag Tag (2006) and Crissie Odogwu in The Empire.(2006). She also played the role of Janet in the 2009 Italian film Natale a Beverly Hills [it] (titled "Christmas in Beverly Hills" in English).[4] That same year, she appeared as a guest on in two episodes of GMTV.

She produced and hosted Jambo Jumbo (2010), a documentary on the Maasai Mara in Kenya narrated by Sir Richard Branson.[5] She collaborated with Branson again on Equation of Change (2010). She was credited as Amanda G. Alys in both documentaries.[6]

Van Annan wrote, directed and produced the 2013 television series Celebville360. She was executive producer of the 2014 reality webseries The Diary of a Nigerian Wife through Great Light Entertainment.[7]

In 2020 she played the role of Lisa in Gregory Hatanaka's Body of Night and appeared in the comedy film Acrylic.

Activism[edit]

Amanda Van Annan co-founded the women's education charity Etcetera, with a fellow volunteer she met while filming in Kenya with Richard Branson.[8] She is actively involved with CAMFED, a non-profit organization that supports the education of young girls in Africa.[9] She was also an ambassador for One Laptop per Child.[2]

Beauty and fashion[edit]

Amanda co-founded Evolution Extensions, a hair extension company, with actress Judi Shekoni.[10] Van Annan also founded Elicina Europe and DNA Hair USA.[11][12]

In September 2019, she became Senior Vice President of Miko Beauty.[13]

Van Annan hosts the podcast Beauty and the Beat, which was launched on May 25, 2020.[14] The podcast has covered topics related to the fashion and beauty industry such as mental health, and body positivity, as well as racism and police brutality in the United States.[15]

Personal life[edit]

Van Annan is the niece of Kofi Annan, the 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations.[16] Her father is Ghanaian and her mother is from Martinique, however Van Annan was adopted at a young age and was raised in London.[17]
