Amar Fayaz, (Sindhi: امر فياض), (born 1st December 1972) is a writer and computer programmer who writes on socio-political issues and develops computer programming in the local Sindhi and Urdu languages. He has developed various programs in Sindhi & Urdu languages and has received several awards.
Biography
Amar Fayaz was born in a small village named Jani Buriro, district Khairpur, Sindh on 1st December 1972. He received his primary education from Government Primary School Jani Buriro and, after passing the primary and middle levels, he went to Khairpur for higher education at Government Naz Pilot High School Khairpur Mir’s. He experienced exam phobia, which was discovered in tenth standard when Amar became sick and was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with this psychological illness. The then minister of Education specially issued a directive that Amar would not sit in the examination hall but in the office of the Head of School, college & university. Suddenly, Amar was diagnosed with a cluster of brain tumors. After two operations, Amar was able to continue his education and he joined Shah Abdul Latif University, where he earned a Master’s in Sociology.
Literary work
Amar Fayaz has started writing on socio-political issues through local Sindhi newspapers and, after joining the social development sector, he wrote several case studies on lack of education in remote areas of Pakistan and health hygiene issues. With a literary background, Amar has written short stories and poetry, but his contribution to spreading folk wisdom and the culturally rich poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai in three languages – Urdu, English & Punjabi – is significant. He wrote openly on transgender issues and their identity, which was later published in Urdu Aalmi Akhbar. Following this, the then Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mr. Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, took sou-moto notice and issued orders to NADRA for issuing Computerized Identity Cards to all transgender people living in Pakistan. Meanwhile, he continued writing in Sindhi, Urdu & English through blogs and articles.
Computing Career
Amar Fayaz has endeavoured to bring the latest technology to the service of major Pakistani languages such as Urdu & Sindhi. He realised that these languages faced formidable challenges due to non-compatibility with browsers designed especially for handheld devices such as Tablet computer and Smartphones. One of the major issues, as far as Urdu was concerned, was the use of the traditionally preferred Nastaleeq style on the web. Finally, he was able to create the first Web-based Nastaleeq font 'Amar Nastaleeq'.[1], which is a lightweight font that allows robust and reliable conversion to various embeddable formats for use across major OS’s, browsers and devices. Now, a leading media group of Pakistan, Jang Group, is using this font on their websites. Beside this, he introduced for the first time in the history of the web world the First Sindhi language & Urdu SYNTAX in web development, which led to a milestone of localized coding in foreign languages. Today, his program is widely used in the World Wide Web consortium and it is also utilized in Facebook and other social networks. Amazingly, Amar Fayaz has not obtained any degree or diploma in Computer Science but, like Abdul-Majid Bhurgri, who is a pioneer of Sindhi Computing, Amar is a legacy of MB-Sindh[2]. Then Newports Institute of Communications & Economics invited him to take responsibilities as Head of Department in Information Technology, where he introduced the first student blogging system in the faculty. After one year, the Government of Sindh initiated the Abdul-Majid Bhurgri Institute of Sindhi Computing under the umbrella of the Sindhi Language Authority, where Amar was appointed as Deputy Director IT. Today, Amar is busy converting Sindhi Literature, dictionaries and books into the latest cutting-edge technology of the Web & Mobile Apps from the platform of the Sindhi Language Authority.
