Ambiq Micro, Inc. (NYSE: AMBQ) is an American fabless semiconductor company that designs ultra-low-power microcontrollers and systems-on-chip for battery-powered "edge AI" devices such as smartwatches, fitness bands, and other Internet of Things endpoints.[3][4] Founded in 2010 by University of Michigan researchers Scott Hanson, David Blaauw, and Dennis Sylvester, the company is headquartered in Austin, Texas.[2] Ambiq went public on the New York Stock Exchange in July 2025 under the ticker "AMBQ".[5]

History

Ambiq originated from low-power circuit research at the University of Michigan, where Hanson’s doctoral work explored operating transistors at sub-threshold voltages to reduce energy use.[2] The company launched in January 2010, initially selling an ultra-low-power clock IC before expanding into microcontrollers and SoCs.[2] Fumihide ("Humi") Esaka became chief executive officer in 2016.[6]

Ambiq filed for an initial public offering in July 2025 and listed shares on the NYSE as AMBQ later that month.[7][8]

Technology

Ambiq commercializes Subthreshold Power Optimized Technology (SPOT), a design approach that operates transistors near or below their threshold voltage to cut active and sleep-mode power consumption.[9][10] The company’s chips target always-on sensing and on-device machine learning ("edge AI") where battery life and thermal limits constrain compute.[11]

Products

Ambiq’s product lines include:

  • Apollo microcontrollers and SoCs for wearables and IoT, including the Apollo4 family announced for always-on voice and graphics workloads;[12]
  • Apollo4 Blue Lite, a Bluetooth Low Energy SoC aimed at digital health and fitness devices;[13][14]
  • Ultra-low-power real-time clocks (RTCs).[1]

Ambiq also maintains neuralSPOT, an open-source SDK and model zoo to help deploy embedded AI on its SoCs.[15][16]

Deployments

Independent teardowns and reports have identified Ambiq chips in several consumer wearables:

  • Fitbit Luxe — TechInsights documented an Ambiq Apollo4 Blue MCU with TSMC eMRAM in the device.[17][18]
  • Fitbit Charge 5 — a TechInsights teardown via Electronics360 lists a 32-bit Arm microprocessor from Ambiq Micro on the main board.[19][20]
  • Xiaomi Smart Band 8 — coverage notes the device is built around Ambiq’s Apollo4 Blue Lite MCU.[21]

Initial public offering

Ambiq filed its S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in July 2025 and listed shares on the NYSE as AMBQ later that month.[22][23] On the first day of trading, its shares nearly doubled from the $24 IPO price amid heavy trading volatility.[24] According to the company’s filing, 2024 net sales were US$76.1 million, with significant exposure to consumer electronics customers.[1]

Corporate governance

Ambiq’s board is chaired by venture capitalist Wen Hsieh; other directors include CEO Fumihide Esaka and founder Scott Hanson, among others.[25][26]
