Gemma Ameera (born March 4, 1988), known professionally by her stage name Ameera, is a British-born Australian singer and composer best known for her work in the band Gypsys Gift and her solo musical career.[1] She has included elements of Tribal, World, Electronic, Celtic, New Age and Soundscape in her musical work.
Early life and career
Ameera was born in the United Kingdom and played piano from an early age. Her stage name Ameera – princess in Arabic – was the nickname given to her in Dubai.[2]
In 2011, Ameera formed the five-piece Chamber Rock band Gypsys Gift with Jimi May.[2] In 2013, the band received the ‘Best Folk Song’ award at the Australian Independent Music Awards.[3]
Her music has been featured on TV shows such as Channel Ten’s, Bondi Ink and Music Channels CMC and Channel V.[4]
New World
In February 2021, Ameera released her debut album 'New World' and first single ‘Raindance’.[1] Originally set to release in 2020, the album was delayed after Ameera signed to publishing label Urband & Lazar/Kobalt. The album was mixed by Brandon Friesen and mastered by Howie Weinberg.[4][2]
Ameera is credited with creating the 'New World' musical genre, which is a progression of World Music.[5][6] The new genre was born after the passing of her mother inspired her to explore her own sound. Ameera experimented with foreign musical instruments and music theories and created music that encapsulated modern Earth, culture and language.[6][5]
Awards and nominations
In 2013, Gypsys Gift were nominated for seven awards at the annual Australian Independent Music Awards,[7] their song The Fight winning Best World/Folk song.[7]
