Domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) |
The American Blue Bay Shepherd is a breed currently in development to produce dogs that are lupine in appearance. They are named for their origin in Palm Bay, Florida and the blue German Shepherd Dogs, one of the breeds in their ancestry.
History[edit]
The American Blue Bay Shepherd has been in development for over 20 years. The first litters were finally produced in March 2011.The goal of the breed was to develop a dog that would have the willingness to please, the loyal nature and trainability of a well-bred German shepherd with the extremely good health, loving nature and awesome beauty of their wolf ancestry. With temperament a priority, the blue-coated German Shepherd Dog composes the majority of the Blue Bay Shepherd's breed makeup, which can include wolf, Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, and trace amounts of other breeds. The breeder, Vicki Spencer, crossed her line of wolfdogs with imported French blue German Shepherd dogs to produce the first generation of American Blue Bay Shepherds.
Characteristics[edit]
The American Blue Bay Shepherd's main goal was to produce a dog with lupine physical characteristics while maintaining trainability, confidence, soft temperaments, and sweet personalities. Aggression, aloofness, and protective or guarding tendencies are adverse traits in the American Blue Bay Shepherd.
Appearance[edit]
While in the early development stages, the American Blue Bay Shepherd's appearance varies with coat length, ear size and shape, and body size. Coat colors have included white, fawn, blue, and black. The ideal appearance is blue with a plush or long coat, light eyes, small, rounded ears with females being 50–70 lb (23–32 kg) and males being 70–120 lb (32–54 kg).
Character[edit]
American Blue Bay Shepherds are generally extremely sociable and very easily trained, gentle with children and considered a companion dog rather than a breed developed for sport.
Popularity and uses[edit]
Primarily bred as companion dogs, American Blue Bay Shepherds are commonly seen interacting with the public, walking off-leash, and enjoying time with their human company.
