The American Dually goat is an American breed of goat that is a crossbreed between a Registered Pygmy buck and a registered Nubian doe.[1] It was selectively bred for dual purpose characteristics that allowed for a higher milk production, rapid weight growth in their kids, and a compact, muscled frame that allows makes them suitable for meat production [2]. They are considered a mid-size breed and have a focus on efficient feed to growth conversion. The American Dually Goat Registry was opened in March 2021 with a closed purebred herdbook as well as a standard herd book that offers American Dually owners to breed up their unregistered duallies [2].

History[edit]

The American Dually goat is a newer goat breed offered for registry. The purebred and standard herd books were opened in 2021. The breed was established in Colorado by the American Dually Goat Registry. It is a crossbreed of a registered Pygmy buck and registered Nubian doe and was selected for its midsize capabilities of fulfilling both a milk and meat production ability [2].

Characteristics[edit]

The American Dually goat breed standard has a max height of 20-26" for does and 22-28" for bucks. Does have a weight range of 90-130lbs, and bucks have a weight range of 100-150lbs. Preference is towards smaller, more compact and efficient duallies. Larger goats who have low production ultimately defeat the purpose of a mid-size dual purpose goat. Goats are accepted as horned, polled, or disbudded. Muscular, deep brisket is the ultimate goal. [1]

Use[edit]

Does kid on average 2-3 kids[2], with some does kidding up to 5 in one kidding. The goal of growth in kids is a 50lb weight by 3 months of age. Due to their pygmy ancestry, their butterfat is frequently on the higher end averaging 5.5-7%. It allows for the perfect milk for cheesemaking. A high producing doe can produce over a gallon a day in milk with well-sized, suitable teats for milking. It's important for American Dually breeders to focus on their personal goals in their herd that further the improvement of the breed.

As a meat producer, kids can be marketable at a younger age due to their fast growth in the first 6 months. The goal for dressed weight on a processed goat is 60%.

Herd Book[edit]

The American Dually goat has a closed purebred herd book as well as a standard herd book. The Standard herd book allows for DOES that are Native on Appearance to be registered as Grade American Duallies. Through the breeding of 3 generations with a Grade American Dually and a Purebred American Dually, the 4th generation is considered a Standard American Dually and awarded a Standard certificate. It allows for American Dually owners whose herd did not start off registered to achieve registration papers for their goats without entirely starting with a new herd.
