American Headache Society

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The American Headache Society (AHS) is a professional society of health care providers dedicated to the study and treatment of headache and facial pain.[1]

In 1990, the AHS founded the American Council for Headache Education (ACHE). It is a partnership between patients and health care professionals devoted to enhancing public understanding of headaches.[2]

The AHS also publishes a peer-reviewed journal, Headache.[3]

Background[edit]

The American Headache Society (AHS) was initially founded on April 8, 1959, during the annual meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA). It was founded as a platform to bring together physicians from a diverse number of fields and specialties to share their experiences, concepts and developments about headache and related conditions. Since its formation, there have been a number of monumental developments.[4]

The society hosts a number of conferences to advance the field of headache medicine. Each year, it hosts a scientific meeting that brings together the top researchers in the Headache World. In addition, the AHS developed an annual headache symposium in 1970 that continues today and is held in every fall in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Scottsdale Headache Symposium addresses a variety of topics, with the goal of teaching health care professionals. They have also developed the "Comprehensive Migraine Education Program" which is a one-day program held across the United States, intended to discuss the data on the scope and distribution of migraine with an emphasis on chronic migraine. It is a way for other medical professionals to learn the latest in Headache Medicine while earning CME credit. It focuses on acute migraine treatment optimization and ways to improve acute treatment satisfaction and success.[5]

The AHS is also focused on education, including helping to begin and maintain fellowships. It is also involved in helping with career development for recent fellowship graduates. The site contains links to new fellowship programs and also has a list of new jobs available across the country.

The AHS is also focused on provided resources for patients. In 1990, the Society formed the American Council for Headache Education (ACHE), a partnership between patients and health care professionals devoted to enhancing public understanding of this widespread and underestimated illness. ACHE is now known as the AHS Committee for Headache Education.[6]
