American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama

The American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama (ASGPP) is a U.S. not-for-profit 501(c)(3) national membership organization of professionals who are board-certified in psychodrama, sociometry and group psychotherapy, psychodrama trainees at various levels of study, professionals who are interested in the use of action and role play methods who are educators attorneys, theater professionals, and related practitioners in the fields of drama therapy, art therapy, expressive arts therapies and other creative arts and alternative therapies, and university and college students.

The organization sponsors an annual conference and an annual online symposium, publishes a membership newsletter and an annual journal known as the Journal of Psychodrama, Group Psychotherapy and Society[1].

Founded in 1942 by Dr. Jacob L. Moreno, the originator of psychodrama, ASGPP is the oldest psychodrama and group psychotherapy organization in the world.

The organization is based in based in Merchantville, New Jersey, with collective groups throughout the United States.

Mission statement[edit]

The American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama[2] is rooted in the philosophy of Dr. Jacob L. Moreno. The ASGPP promotes the development of creativity, spontaneity and encounter to enhance the relationship between individuals, families and communities, and works actively to heal and transform society through the knowledge and practice of psychodrama, group psychotherapy and sociometry in all its diverse applications.

Activities[edit]

ASGPP organizes its annual spring conference, usually in March or April, that showcases presentations from top trainers in the United States and around the world. Common workshop themes include trauma, addictions, eating disorders, ethics, dramatic improvisation in education, integration of creative arts therapies and other therapeutic fields, law, coaching and other topics.  Continuing education hours in most fields are available to professionals wanting CE hours for re-credentialing.

ASGPP offers an annual online symposium, usually in the fall, that focuses on a therapeutic or social theme. The October 2023 theme is "Trauma and Psychodrama: Reducing Harm and Strengthening Resilience." Online psychodrama hours towards psychodrama credentialing are offered for many workshops.

Membership[edit]

ASGPP welcomes all students and professionals who are interested in the study and practice of psychodrama, sociometry, group psychotherapy, sociodrama and related action methods as members. Members receive multiple member benefits and are eligible to take leadership positions in the organization.

Most of our members live in the United States although the number of international members is growing.

It works closely with a second membership organization, the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy[3], which certifies practitioners and trainers.

Publications[edit]

ASGPP’s peer-reviewed academic journal is Journal of Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy. It is the only U.S. journal on this topic and a leading publication in the field of psychodrama, sociometry and group psychotherapy worldwide.

ASGPP has re-published Jacob Levy Moreno: 1889-1974[4], the biography of Dr. J.L. Moreno, researched and written by Rene Marineau.

ASGPP has re-published The Warm-Up Box,[5]" a collection of warm-up ideas by the late Carl Hollander, TEP, which are useful for anyone who works with groups, and accompanying instruction booklet.

Tian Dayton[6], Ph.D. TEP, trainer, consultant and author of numerous books on psychodrama, sociometry and group psychotherapy, particularly related to trauma and addiction treatment.

Antonina Garcia[7], LCSW, EdD, TEP, RDT/BCT, internationally recognized psychodrama and sociodrama trainer and co-author of “Sociodrama: Who's in Your Shoes[8]?” with Patricia Sternberg, published by Praeger Press.

Rene Marineau, Ph.D., TEP, psychoanalyst and psychodramatist and author of "Jacob Levy Moreno: 1889-1974," a well-respected Moreno biography.

Jonathan D. Moreno, Ph.D., U.S. philosopher and historian who specializes in the intersection of bioethics, culture, science, and national security, and has published seminal works on the history, sociology and politics of biology and medicine. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, the past president of past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, and the son of Dr. J.L. Moreno, the originator of psychodrama. He is also the author of Impromptu Man: J.L. Moreno and the Origins of Psychodrama, Encounter Culture, and the Social Network[9], published by Bellvue Literary Press.

Daniel Joseph Tomasulo, Ph.D., MFA, TEP, American counseling psychologist, writer, and professor and the Academic Director and core faculty at the Spirituality Mind Body Institute (SMBI), Teachers College, Columbia University.
