Amitava Nag (born 21 February 1975) is an Indian writer and film critic hailing from Kolkata.
Early life and education
Amitava Nag was born in Calcutta (not Kolkata at that time) on 21 February 1975 as a second child to Manika Nag (19 September 1940 – 2 April 2013) and Jnananjan Nag (born 8 October 1937).
Hailing from an academic family, Amitava’s entire schooling was in South Point School, which is still one of the most eminent schools in West Bengal, India.
After passing out of school, Amitava followed his father’s steps and enrolled himself in the graduate classes of Presidency College in the Physics department. It was here that Amitava’s mind opened up to a wider literature, culture and politics. He was soon caught up in the vortex of several activities. In 1994, Amitava and a few friends restarted the defunct film club – Presidency College Chalachchitra Samsad (PCCS) with the hope of watching international film classics. They soon organised a retrospective of the films of Ingmar Bergman. The films of Bergman changed Amitava’s perspectives about cinema, and also art. The love for cinema that blossomed in 1994 remained with Amitava and defined his choices and actions at important junctions of life.
After passing out of College with a first class in Physics, but disillusioned about pursuing a goal in science, Amitava enrolled himself in the Master of Computer Application course in Jadavpur University after passing an entrance examination.
Career
Profession
Amitava joined Tata Consultancy Services in 2000 and worked there for 9 years, followed by a short stint in Tech Mahindra before joining IBM India. He left the IT domain in 2016 and joined Garden High School as Director of Planning and Systems.
Silhouette
Amitava, along with a few friends, started the Silhouette Film Society in 2001. ‘Silhouette’ magazine was published as one of its activities in 2002. After 8 physical publications, ‘Silhouette’ stopped being a hardcopy magazine.
Writing
Amitava[3][4] started writing poems since his college days. However, his initial foray into more serious writing started with writing reviews for the journal of South Asian Cinema Federation in 1999 and then in Maharashtra Herald. Since then, Amitava[5] has written several essays and reviews on cinema in Bengali and English and has several books to his credit.
In parallel, Amitava Nag[6] has also pursued his interest in fiction and poetry and writes both in the two languages whenever he finds time.
