Amitesh Grover is a theatre director and artist. He has been covered by CWIT as one of India’s leading theatre makers[1] who has won multiple awards and exhibited his projects across the globe. Grover’s work spans performance, video, digital art, text projects, installation, and theatre. He is currently Associate Professor[2] at National School of Drama. He also curates contemporary performance and is a published writer.

Biography

Grover’s work has been described to have “transcended the barriers of disciplines”, working with live acts, texts, objects, images, installations and films for more than a decade[3]. He is the recipient of MASH FICA New Media Award[4], Prohelvetia South Asian Residency Award[5], Bismillah Khan National Award, Charles Wallace Award (U.K.)[6], and was nominated for Arte Laguna Prize (Italy)[7], Prix Ars Electronica (Austria) and Forecast Award (Germany)[8].

His work has been shown at Southbank Centre (London), Arts Centre (Melbourne), MT Space (Canada), HKW Berlin (Germany), Segal Festival (U.S.), Belluard Bollwerk International (Switzerland)[9], The Hartell Gallery (U.S.), Foundation of Indian Contemporary Art, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, The Shrine Gallery, VAICA Video Art Festival, TATA Literature Festival, Bharat Rang Mahotsav, Prithvi Theatre Festival, Serendipity Arts Festival. He was an artist resident at PACT Zollverein (Germany), Tokyo Culture Creation Project (Japan)[10], and Theatretreffen Berlin[11]. His work has been commissioned by the Chennai Photo Biennale[12] and by Australia's Sydney-based 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art[13]. He is the creator of India’s first cyber-theatre play THE LAST POET[14], and his billboard art VELOCITY PIECES[15] has received wide-spread critical acclaim[16].

He was the Artistic Director for International Theatre Festival of Kerala[17], Ranga Shankara Festival (Bangalore)[18], and Nove Writers’ Festival (Prague). His writings have been published by Routledge, Taylor and Francis, Bloomsbury (U.K.), Berghahn Journals (Berlin), Art Journal (Singapore), Tulika Books, TAKE on Art, Indian Cultural Forum, RAIOT, The Outlook Magazine, The Indian Express, and Hakara Online. Essays on his work have appeared in Postdramatic Theatre and India, ASAP Art, and Imagined Worlds (University of Chicago Press).

He has given talks at ANCER (Lasalle College of Art, Singapore), University of Exeter (U.K.), Vilnius National Theatre (Lithuania), Curating for Change (Canada), APAM Australia, Cornell University (U.S.), the 23rd Performance Studies International Meet (Germany).

Currently, he is Associate Professor at the National School of Drama (India), and visiting faculty at National Institue of Design (Ahmedabad), Shiv Nadar University (U.P.), and Tisch School of the Arts (NYU). He is an alumnus of The National School of Drama (India) and completed his post graduation from Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts London. He is based in New Delhi, India.
